Subsequently his wife would travel to Murchison by train and ride her bicycle, with the baby in a basket, out to the camp to visit her husband. Later visits were with a friend in their DKW car. The majority of these people were of the Lutheran religion. At first there was no Lutheran pastor or church in the area and they held services under the gum trees or in their homes once they had been built. The early arrivals included the Haeusler, Klinge, Bartel, Rothe and Paech families. They were later joined by members of the Muller, Lange, Pumpa, Lobbe, Heckendorf, Zeinert, Schubert, Schuster, Schubert and Terlich families amongst others. The first Lutheran Church was built in Havelock Street, Wodonga and was dedicated in 1875. This building was used for approximately 90 years until it was demolished and replaced by a temporary building and then a second church which was dedicated in 1978. The Ovens and Murray Advertiser on 4th August 1874 reported "The Rev. Goessling pastor of the German Lutheran Church, Gerogery has laid the foundation stone of the new church for the members of his denomination residing at Wodonga, in accordance with the rights of the church. The building was to be 30 feet by 20 feet and 14 feet high, of brick with white facings and Gothic windows. There was to be a porch and vestry, one at either end, measuring 8 feet by 10 feet". Plans were initiated to build a new church from the late 1990s. After many years of planning and hard work, the last service in the Saint John’s Lutheran Church in Havelock Street was held on Sunday 7th May 2023 and a new Church was constructed. From 14th May 2023 the Parish held its worship services in Luther Hall at Victory Lutheran College in Drage Road, West Wodonga. The new Saint John’s Church was consecrated on 18 August 2024.This photo is significant because it depicts the original Lutheran Church in Wodonga. This building was a weatherboard cottage evidently built in three stages with the front door in the central part, planked by three paned double casements, six-paned sash windows in the rear section; front section and timber veradah with scrolled vallance. The architect and builders are unknown. The outside doors to the cellar and the simple chimney breast remain a notable feature. The original owner was Conrad Heinz a former mayor of Bendigo who with two brothers opened a butcher's shop in the building in 1872. In 1883 he moved to Mt Korong Road Iron Bark, where he carried on another thriving business and built a substantial house close by. Konrad first made his way to Castlemaine where his sister was living but, after a short stay with her, moved to the Bendigo region where his brother was prospecting, and obtained work in a butcher’s shop. An interest in horses led to his enlistment in the Prince of Wales Light Horse, in which he served for ten years. In 1866, at the age of 20, he married Franzisca Inglefinger. She had arrived in Victoria from Wuertemberg on board the “John Linn” in 1857; she was Konrad’s junior by two years. Pastor Munzel celebrated the marriage in the German Lutheran Church in Bendigo. Albert Conrad, was born in the Heinz home in Webster Street. In 1872 Conrad was naturalised; this enabled him to buy a property and go into business in his own right. Konrad’s friendly and helpful disposition brought many customers to his shop from Happy Valley and Ironbark and his business prospered. When Conrad Heinz left Happy Valley Road, one brother had died, but his widow carried on the first butchering business with the help of a lad and one of her three daughters. The little shop and residence stood for over a century on the spot, almost untouched by modern progress. The shop was closed for 70 years at most. PAstor Friedrich Leypoldt was born in Stuttgart, Germany in 1844 and came to Australia in 1869 and became pastor of the Bendigo Lutheran church. He married Elise Julia Buddee in 1870. He served as pastor for 60 years. On the occasion of his 25th anniversary he was presented with 80 sovereigns raised by donations from the German community and other Bendigo citizens. He died 1/1/1932 and is buried in the Lutheran section of the White Hills Cemetery. 2. Mr Henry Iser was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1854 and emigrated to Australia in the late 1880's. He had various positions before travelling to Sydney to take up a position on the island of Yap in the Carolina group, Micronesia. Ill health caused his return to Bendigo where he was an accountant, firstly for Lyceum Grocery Store and then Cohn Brothers Brewery. He brought his fiancée, Caroline Collen from Germany and they married in 1888.When his brother-in-law Willem Humme became ill, Henry joined him at his timber yard and ironmongery, eventually being made a partner. Pastor Steiniger served both Trinity German Lutheran Church in East Melbourne and the Thomastown congregation from 1935 to 1964. Over nearly three decades, he guided his community through socially and politically turbulent times, including the years surrounding the Second World War. In April 1942, he was suddenly interned by the Australian Government and held at Tatura Internment Camp for 930 days before his release in 1944. Despite this profound disruption, he returned to his pastoral duties, continuing to support, stabilise, and preserve the cultural and spiritual life of his congregation. The black top hat reflects formal clerical dress of the early–mid twentieth century. Within German Lutheran tradition, such hats were worn to important services and solemn occasions, particularly funerals, symbolising respect and reverence. The accompanying white gloves and pastor’s collar complete the ceremonial ensemble, offering a fuller understanding of pastoral attire and the visual language of Lutheran liturgical practice of the time. Together, these objects hold strong historical, cultural, and interpretive value. They honour the enduring contribution of Pastor Steiniger and deepen the connection between the Westgarthtown site and the community it served.
