John Henry Lockett OAM (22 January 1891 – 25 May 2002) was the oldest man ever in Australia when he died aged 111 years, 123 days. As one of the last surviving veterans of World War I, he was acclaimed as a national hero during the last decade of his life. Lockett was born in the small Victorian town of Waanyarra, near Bendigo. He left school aged nine to work on a local farm. Later, he worked for his uncles in the Mallee. On 24 March 1916, he travelled to Mildura to enlist in the Australian Imperial Force. Jack Lockett was born to his single mother Mary Elizabeth Lockett in 1891. He lived with his mother and grandparents at Waanyarra. Later on, Elizabeth married Robert Burstall. Jack went to work for a farmer at age thirteen and eventually went on to farm land in the Mallee with two of his uncles. After serving in World War 1 Jack Lockett married and raised four children on the family farm at Linga.Scan of an old photograph of Jack Lockett's mother and extended family. The Mallee was first settled by Europeans settlers in the 1870s. Aboriginal people had inhabited the region for thousands of years prior to the Europeans, but their numbers were small due to the arid climate and lack of permanent water. Economic downturns and drought conditions delayed significant development, and it was during the 1920s that saw most land clearing for the growing of cereal crops. Subsequent droughts and economic hardship have seen once prosperous small towns lose their population. The endurance and perseverance of the Mallee farmers is a testament to family and neighbour relationships that helped build communities.Scan of photograph of a group portrait that includes Jack Lockett and three of his four children.
