... ...man's waistcoat...A man's waistcoat with cream cotton weave front pieces and cream cotton lining and back. ...Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and Village Great Ocean Road Shipwreck Coast Warrnambool vest waistcoat needlework sewing Stephenson family man's waistcoat A man's waistcoat with cream cotton weave front pieces and cream cotton lining and back. ...This item is one of a collection of clothing items that belonged to the Stephenson family who lived at 22 McCracken Street, Kensington, Melbourne. Matthew Stephenson (1861 – 1943) who had grown up on the Bendigo goldfields and shifted to Melbourne in the early 1900’s was a train driver and later, a fireman with the railways. His wife Elizabeth Jane (Betsy) Wigley (1865 – 1953) also grew up on the goldfields around Majorca and Bendigo. They married in 1885 in Bendigo. They had two daughters – Ethel Evelyn Stephenson (1886 – 1956) and Lillian or Lila (1891 – 1977) who were milliners and dressmakers and who continued to live in the family home after the death of their parents. The family are recorded as living at 22 McCracken Street, Kensington, as early as 1914. It is not known who made or owned the clothing that makes up this collection but as it appears to be from the late Victorian and early Edwardian era however the vest was probably made by one of the three ladies of the house, for their husband and father, Matthew Stephenson. During W.W.2, a local Warrnambool couple (Meryl and Tony Everard) boarded with them – Tony was in the airforce training paratroopers to jump into (and survive) enemy territory and his wife Meryl worked in the Methodist baby Home. The Everards developed a close friendship with the Stephensons and were responsible for clearing out the house (and finding this clothing collection) after Lila died in 1977. Although by 1916, men's "ready to wear" clothing were widely available, this waistcoat was handmade (possibly by Matthew's wife or daughters). Men's suits in the early part of the twentieth century were predominantly three piece, consisting of a jacket, vest (or waistcoat) and trousers made from matching fabrics. Some men liked to wear a watch attached to their waistcoat with a fob chain. This item is an example of clothing worn by men on special occasions, in the late 19th and early 20th century.A man's waistcoat with cream cotton weave front pieces and cream cotton lining and back. The left front features five machine worked horizontal buttonholes and one vertical buttonhole (for a fob watch) and two inset pockets. The right hand side has five corresponding stud holes and one inset pocket. The studs or buttons are missing. The lining and back of the waistcoat are made from a plain cream cotton fabric. The back also features a cotton strap with a two pronged metal buckle.flagstaff hill maritime museum and village, great ocean road, shipwreck coast, warrnambool, vest, waistcoat, needlework, sewing, stephenson family, man's waistcoat -

... ...Man's Waistcoat...Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and Village Great Ocean Road Warrnambool Camperdown Merino Teal family William Herbert Teal Daisy Teal Daisy Davis Waistcoat Man's Waistcoat Vest Wedding Handmade vest wedding clothes Man's handmade vest with a green and cream patterned brocade front, trimmed with green cord around the edges and featuring four inset pockets (also trimmed with the green cord). ...This cream and green patterned vest is said to have been made for William Herbert Teal as part of his "trouseau" on the occasion of his marriage to Daisy Edith Davis on April 14th 1916 at St. Peter's Church, Merino, Victoria, Australia. It is a handmade waistcoat but it is not known who made it. William Teal was born in 1889 to Elijah Teal and Isabella Campbell Reid in Camperdown, Victoria and after marrying, William and Daisy also lived (and worked as farmers) in the Camperdown area. They had seven children. Daisy died in 1962 and William died in 1975. A wedding portrait of William and Daisy shows William wearing a dark suit consisting of a single breasted coat, trousers, good shoes, gloves and a shirt with a stiff, high collar, however if he is wearing this vest, it is unfortunately hidden under his coat. Although by 1916, men's "ready to wear" clothing were widely available, this waistcoat was handmade (possibly by his mother or sister or future wife) and has been preserved by his family for almost one hundred years. Men's suits in the early part of the twentieth century were predomininantly three piece, consisting of a jacket, vest ( or waistcoat) and trousers made from matching fabrics. On special occasions (such as a marriage) the groom might also wear gloves and have a flower in his buttonhole. Some men liked to wear a watch attached to their waistcoat with a fob chain. This item is of significance as a rare example of a man's vest that was made for a special occasion (William Teal's marriage in 1916) and preserved by his family for several generations.Man's handmade vest with a green and cream patterned brocade front, trimmed with green cord around the edges and featuring four inset pockets (also trimmed with the green cord). It has six buttonholes down the left front edge (plus a hand embroidered buttonhole to hold a fob chain) and six corresponding holes for shank buttons (which are missing) down the right front edge. The back and lining are made from cream cotton fabric. The back has a centre seam and a strap with a metal buckle with prongs (to allow for adjusting the length). The cream lining and back display some discolouration and brown marks.flagstaff hill maritime museum and village, great ocean road, warrnambool, camperdown, merino, teal family, william herbert teal, daisy teal, daisy davis, waistcoat, man's waistcoat, vest, wedding, handmade vest, wedding clothes -

... Through the gates can be seen a man in waistcoat standing in front of a cannon. ...Through the gates can be seen a man in waistcoat standing in front of a cannon. The gates are cast iron, double carriage gates with single pedestrian gates on either side and supported by four cast iron posts with ornamental finials. ...The cast iron gates (manufactured in Glasgow) introduced at the North West entrance in 1907. The gates were purchased from ‘Fairlie” corner of Acland and Anderson Streets, South Yarra at the cost of 72 pounds and cost 60 pounds to install. They had originally cost the owners of ‘Fairlie’ 1200 pounds. Lee Heap Furniture Warehouse of Williamstown used the postcards to advertise. The postcards are evidence of the interest the gardens held as a subject for postcard publishers. The text and images provide a snapshot into fashions, social interests and concerns of the time. The professionally produced images provide a pictorial history of Gardens including changing planting styles, various structures and features of the Gardens eg the aviary, cannons, the fountain, the second Curator’s Lodge and gates. The images offer an opportunity to compare garden vistas with the present day. The image in this postcard shows the gates intact and as installed in 1907. The current layout of this area still reflects the change of design, which followed the 1907 removal of the first gardener's residence and the subsequent re-organisation of this quarter of the gardens. This postcard is evidence of the placement of one of the cannons relocated from Fort Gellibrand in 1906. They were removed from the Gardens in the 1960s. These same cannons remain a feature on the Williamstown waterfront in 2013. Black and white image of main entrance gates which are open. Through the gates can be seen a man in waistcoat standing in front of a cannon. Featured in "Newsworthy: Melbourne in photographs 1933-1936" exhibition at East Melbourne Library, October to December 2023. Exhibition caption: In December 1933, The Age reported that the manually wound mechanisms at both Melbourne and North Melbourne Town Halls would be replaced with electric motors: "Town Hall Timekeeping. Maintaining that the system of keeping time in the civic centre was antiquated, the chairman of the Town Hall and baths committee (Mr. E. L. Morton) stated yesterday that it had been proposed to install electric motors for the winding of the tower clocks at the Melbourne and North Melbourne town halls. At present it takes 600 turns four times a week to wind up the North Melbourne town hall clock, and the winding is no light task, it being a "two-handed job." However, the installation of electric motors for the winding of these tower clocks is but one aspect of the general developmental programme contemplated in regard to the timekeeping at the Town Hall. It is proposed to institute a complete system of electric clocks all functioning from the one master clock in the tower. At present the town hall clocks show varying times. The only one which is systematically checked daily is the town clock." Source: "NEWS OF THE DAY." The Age 12 December 1933 p8 http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article203350688 Additional information: "THE TOWN HALL CLOCK. RECONDITIONING WORK IN HAND. Desirous of keeping abreast of the time in a literal sense at least, the inconsistency of the massive clock in the tower of the Melbourne Town Hall has caused the City Council authorities considerable inconvenience of late. After twenty-five years of efficient service, the Town Hall clock recently gave manifestations of the most flagrant flippancy. Reports were brought to the notice of the town clerk (Mr. W. V. McCall) that one day it was fast, whilst the next day it was slow. These "blow hot, blow cold" tactics caused much annoyance, and at least one member of the City Council nearly missed a game of billiards as a result. So the order was given to have the clock's four faces lifted and the inner workings reconditioned. Facing north, south, east and west at the one time, the Town Hall clock has been regarded as symbolic of the City Council. Ticking out eternity as it faces the east, that fourth face of the clock has suffered most. It looks in the direction, of Parliament House, but now the glass has cracked. The weather has got to the works, and after languishing to the extent of twenty minutes late, it has now stopped. The experts are on the job, and like the secondhand automobile which the council has purchased for the Lord Mayor, they are going to make a job of it. Within a few days, with its face lifted and the works revitalised, the Town Hall clock will once again look even better than its old self. Even time takes toll of a clock." Alan was the son of Albert Vinnell and Ada Rose Wood. He attended school in Macarthur about 40 kilometres northwest of Warrnambool. The Fletcher Jones Man’s Shop was located at the corner of Liebig and Koroit Streets in Warrnambool. David Fletcher Jones (1895-1977) served in World War One and in the 1920s set up as a travelling hawker selling drapery in Western Victoria. In 1924 he leased three shops in Liebig Street and in 1928 he moved to the Koroit/Liebig Streets intersection with his Man’s Shop. He manufactured men’s clothing on site. In 1931 a new set of two-storeyed buildings was erected on the site and Fletcher Jones moved into the building. In 1946 a Fletcher Jones shop was opened in Melbourne and in 1948 a factory was established in Raglan Parade, Warrnambool with a new company, Fletcher Jones and Staff established in 1951. This company became known Australia-wide, firstly for the production of men’s trousers, and later men’s and women’s clothing. By 2011 the Warrnambool factory was sold and the company dissolved. This waistcoat is of historical interest as an example of the high quality work produced at the Fletcher Jones Man’s Shop in Warrnambool in the mid 1940s. The Fletcher Jones business became one of the most important ones in Warrnambool in the 20th century and the early 21st century. This is a sleeveless woollen waistcoat made of blue striped material with a black cotton backing. The back has two black cotton flaps with a metal buckle to allow for the tightening of the coat across the back. The inside is lined with a cream, yellow and grey striped cotton material. The waistcoat has one inside pocket with a button enclosure and four outside pockets. The waistcoat has six black buttons on the outside and a maker’s label stitched on the inside. ‘Fletcher Jones The Man’s Shop Warrnambool Mr A.
