The embroidery has "1918" in the centre. The item was handed down through the family to Irena’s Grandson Noel Ridge. The Speedweve is a tiny darning loom advertised as ‘Lancashire’s smallest loom’. It was manufactured by E & A Chesstok Ltd of Rusholme, Manchester in 1947/48. Object. Blue, damask weave fabric sash, 240 ms long(including fringing) woven with a rose design, and with a .8 cm wide white satin-finish stripe, just inside the side edges. A gold type metallic fringing, 5 cms deep, finishes each end. A woven panel just off centre of the sash, includes eleven figures, including children, three shields, a globe hand and heart. Radiating from the words- FRIENDSHIP LOVE AND TRUTH is an eye like shape, radiating light. At the lower edge of the panel, woven into the fabric are the words, MANCHESTER UNITY of the INDEPENDENT ORDER OF ODD FELLOWS. Above the woven panel is an ornate metal star, 10 cm x 10 cm, with eight points, and made from silver metal sequins and coiled wirework. Centre of the star is padded to a height of 1 cm, covered in satin, sequins and wirework in a circular shape. A 7 cm long metal tassell hangs from the lower edge of star. All three were accomplished needlewomen; also, both Sarah Lees (born 1844) and her daughter, Ann (b 1865) crocheted a wide variety of articles for use in their homes. This decorative embroidered tray cover or tray cloth is beautifully handmade and includes eyelet or Broderie Anglaise embroidery. It was made by either Sarah Lees or her daughter Anne Dale (nee Lees). In the Words of donor, Betty Stone, … “These crocheted and embroidered articles cover a period of three generations- ie. Many of the items were made by Daisy, a skilled dressmaker. Daisy began her apprenticeship at two shillings and sixpence per week at Miss A. E. Emery's dressmaking establishment at 150-152 Liebig Street, Warrnambool. Considered to be the leading house of fashion in Warrnambool, Miss Emery employed about eight young women who worked long hours to sew elaborate gowns for clients, including wives of graziers who would attend the race carnivals and social functions in Warrnambool.
