From the 1860s, colonists in the Moorabbin district discovered tomato growing was very successful. Tomatoes and tomato products from the Moorabbin District won prizes as far afield as NZ., London, Philadelphia, Amsterdam, India as well as in Melbourne. Two particularly successful growers were Henry Comport of Cheltenham, and Edward Zorn at Clayton. As a result of this extensive tomato growing many factories 'sprang up' in the Moorabbin district to process the produce, one of which was the "Tom Smith Pty Ltd" factory. An Advertisement on the 29th August c1912, in the Brighton Southern Cross newspaper for Tom Smith's Tomato Sauce states that it is - "Superior. From absolutely Pure Locally Grown Tomatoes. Put up in our own bottles. A High-Grade Article. Manufactured at Highett Railway Station. Smith & Lambert Manufacturers" Phone Cheltenham 206.This item is significant because it relates to the prize-winning major industry of tomato growing that the Moorabbin colonist market gardeners commenced in the 1860s. Many tomato processing factories also sprang up in the district at that time. Because the tomato industry was virtually wiped out by a virus that attacked the plants in the very early 1900s very few tangible artefacts now remain that relate to what was once an important industry.A clear glass machine-made tomato sauce bottle. The neck of the bottle indicates that the contents were originally sealed with a cork at the top. The glass appears to be of poor quality as air bubbles are evident and was moulded, not hand-blown. The bottle is embossed on the front with the manufacturer's name, and location. The glass embossing on the bottle reads Tom Smith Pty Ltd, Highett Railway Station, Moorabbin, Victoria.tomato, market gardeners, pioneers, early settlers, henry comport, edward zorn, colonists, industry, prize winning, 1860s, moorabbin district, cheltenham, clayton, glass sauce bottle, manufactured glass, bottles

Penicillin is a group of antibiotics derived from Penicillium fungi, including penicillin G, procaine penicillin, benzathine penicillin, and penicillin V. Penicillin antibiotics are historically significant because they are the first drugs that were effective against many previously serious diseases, such as syphilis, and infections caused by staphylococci and streptococci. Penicillins are still widely used today, though many types of bacteria have now become resistant. All penicillins are β-lactam antibiotics and are used in the treatment of bacterial infections caused by susceptible, usually Gram-positive, organisms. The development of penicillin for use as a medicine is attributed to the Australian Nobel laureate Howard Walter Florey, together with the German Nobel laureate Ernst Chain and the English biochemist Norman Heatley A clear glass bottle with a metal fixed top in which the central rubber disc has been pierced by a needle .Front: CRYSTALLINE PENICILLIN / ( SODIUM SALT) G / GLAXO / FOR INJECTION / Use only under medical supervision / 1000000 / UNITS PER VIAL. General use of milk bottles is usually associated with the 20th century , with occasional late 19th century. Initially, milk was delivered in cans stacked upright in a wagon At each stop, someone, usually the wife of the house, would bring a pitcher or a pail to the wagon, and the milk man would ladle out the desired amount of milk. Needless to say, this practice was hazardous and unhealthy. The New York State Tuberculosis Association condemned the practice of selling “loose milk,” still being conducted in New York City in 1922, as a major cause for the spread of tuberculosis (Glass Container1922:8). It is probable that the delivery of milk in glass containers became universal shortly thereafter. The Codd Bottle was first invented by English manufacturer, Hiram Codd at Barnsley in 1870. The groove inside the top of the bottle held a rubber ring. A small glass balll was held against this ring by the pressure of the 'pop' or 'fizzy' carbonated drink inside the bottle. This style of bottle was widely manufactured and used in the production of mineral waters and lemonade. The glass has a slight green tint, known as aqua glass, and is what the Victorian era produced as 'clear glass'This glass Codd bottle with glass ball and partial rubber ring was probably imported from England by Bennetts Pty. Joseph Fowler (1888-1972), was born 28 February 1888 at Bagworth, Leicestershire, England, With his brother Sydney, in the early 1900s Joseph worked in a fruit-preserving business run by an uncle at Maidstone, Kent, and continued with the firm after 1908 when it was relocated at Reading. He married in 1910 and emigrated in 1913 settling at Camberwell, Melbourne. The jars were first manufactured in 1915 in Melbourne, for a fruit-bottling business started at the rear of his small house and the company of J. Fowler & Co. had begun producing home-bottling kits containing a sterilizer, bottles, lids, rings and a thermometer. Initially Fowler travelled the district, selling his kits door-to-door from the back of a cart. In 1920 he bought a shop in Hawthorn, and registered his business as a private company.During the Depression Fowlers Kits became a household name. In 1934 Fowlers Vacola Manufacturing Co. Ltd was registered as a public company. Fowler retired in 1961, but remained chairman of directors; his son Ronald succeeded him as managing director. Joseph died 1972 and when Ronald died in 1978, the company was bought out by the Sydney firm, Hooper Baillie Industries Ltd; it in turn sold to Sabco Ltd of South Australia; in 1994, when Sabco went into receivership, Australian Resource Recovery Technologies re-established Fowlers Vacola Australia Pty Ltd's headquarters in Melbourne. The early settlers of Moorabbin Shire had to be self sufficient and grew their own fruit and vegetables even if not market gardeners They preserved their produce for use all year.A 1 pint, clear, glass, narrow neck bottle with original 'Fowlers Vacola' stopper.Top FOWLERS VACOLA Shoulder of bottle FOWLERS VACOLA ONE PINT FRUIT JUICE BOTTLE Base F452 / M / R trade mark Amarket gardeners, early settlers, moorabbin, bentleigh, cheltenham, fowler james, fowler ronald, fowler's vacola, food preservation

A Mason jar is a moulded glass jar used in canning to preserve food. The mouth of the jar has screw threads on its outer perimeter to accept a metal ring (or "band"). The band, when screwed down, presses a separate stamped steel disc-shaped lid against the rim of the jar. An integral rubber ring on the underside of the lid creates a hermetic seal to the jar. The bands and lids usually come with new jars, and bands and lids are also sold separately; while the bands are reusable, the lids are intended for single use when canning. The Mason jar was invented and patented in November1858 by Philadelphia tinsmith John Landis Mason. There are two distinct types of milk consumption: a natural source of nutrition for all infant mammals and a food product for humans of all ages that is derived from other animals. Milk is a key contributor to improving nutrition and food security particularly in developing countries. Improvements in livestock and dairy technology offer significant promise in reducing poverty and malnutrition in the world. Pasteurization is used to kill harmful micro-organisms by heating the milk for a short time and then immediately cooling it. In the past, milk was always packaged in glass milk bottles The first glass bottle packaging for milk was used in the 1870s. The first company to do so may have been the New York Dairy Company in 1877 with a small glass lid and a tin clip. Lewis P. Whiteman holds the first patent for a glass milk bottle c1884,which was sealed with a waxed paper disk. The Express Dairy Company in England began glass bottle production in 1880. Otto Schott, a chemist and glass engineer, had the vision of uniform production ie making glass items that would resemble one another. At the end of the eighteenth century, with most glass items still created by hand, the quality of output was still a guessing game. Schott was the first to render this an industrial certainty. 1884 Otto Schott, Ernst Abbe and Carl and Roderich Zeiss found the Schott & Associates Glass Technology Laboratory in Jena, Germany. Glastechnisches Laboratorium Schott & Gen was born. Production started in 1886. Original products included optical and thermometer glasses. The following year, a crucial discovery was made: borosilicate, a heat and chemically resistant glass. By it’s 25th year anniversary, the company had grown from an experimental glass factory into an internationally renowned manufacturer of optical and industrial glasses. Soon to be added was fiolax, tube-shaped glass used for vials, ampoules and syringes thus allowing the company to play a significant role in supplying Europe's nascent pharmaceutical industry. Johann August (John) Kruse was instrumental in the development of the pharmaceutical industry and pharmacy training in Victoria. He was a driving force behind the creation of the Pharmaceutical Society of Victoria and was appointed a founding member of the Society's inaugural council in 1857. He manufactured many pharmaceuticals and health products such as mineral waters and 'Kruse's Fluid Magnesia' (1863) which is still in use today. He later went on to produce insecticides and dynamite, then established his own analytical chemistry service. In 1878 Kruse established Victoria's first pharmacy training facility - the Melbourne School of Pharmacy. There pharmacy apprentices were taught chemistry, botany, materia medica and Latin, while country students could study by correspondence. The School was endorsed and monitored by the Pharmacy Board of Victoria to which Kruse was appointed in 1880. Kruse's pharmacy school was the forerunner of the Victorian College of Pharmacy, Monash University, which remains Victoria's only pharmacy training institute. In 1853, shortly after qualifying as pharmacist at the University of Göttingen, Johann August (John) Kruse, moved to London. The medical practitioner Dr S. Weil sent Kruse to Victoria, Australia to manage a new pharmacy and tobacconist's shop which he was having built at 136 Bridge Rd in Richmond. In 1856 Kruse opened a second pharmacy 'John Kruse and Company Chemists and Druggists' at 207 Bourke Street. 1857 the Richmond shop was destroyed by fire, so all pharmaceutical production was moved to the Bourke St premises and later to his new location at 184 Bourke St.. Kruse was forced to sell his business in 1868 to Felton Grimwade and Company and work for them as manager of their chemical works. By the early 1870s he had regained financial independence so left the company to establish his own businesses again. He opened up a pharmacy at 31 Swanston St and in c1874 leased Victoria's premier natural springs, Clifton Springs, on the northern side of the Bellarine Peninsula, where he established a bottling plant. Suspensions of magnesium hydroxide in water, often called Milk of Magnesia, are used as an antacid to neutralize stomach acid, and as a laxative. A test tube, also known as a culture tube or sample tube, is a common piece of laboratory glassware consisting of a finger-like length of glass or clear plastic tubing, open at the top, usually with a rounded U-shaped bottom. Test tubes are widely used by pharmacists to hold, mix, or heat small quantities of solid or liquid chemicals, especially for qualitative experiments and assays. Their round bottom and straight sides minimize mass loss when pouring, make them easier to clean, and allow convenient monitoring of the contents. The long, narrow neck slows down the spreading of vapours and gases to the environment. Test tubes are usually held in special-purpose racks, Test tubes for physics and chemistry are usually made of glass for better resistance to heat and corrosive chemicals and longer life. Tubes made from expansion-resistant glasses, such as borosilicate glass, can be placed directly over a Bunsen burner flame.8 clear glass test tubes of varied capacity with 3 glass mixers sitting in a wooden stand. Listerine is a brand of antiseptic mouthwash product named after Sir Joseph Lister, Bt. FRS (1827 – 1912), who was a British surgeon and a pioneer of antiseptic surgery. By applying Louis Pasteur's advances in microbiology, he promoted the idea of sterile surgery while working at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary. 1865 Lister successfully introduced carbolic acid (now known as phenol) to sterilise surgical instruments, clean wounds, and for washing surgeons hands before and after operations. These measures led to a reduction in post-operative infections and made surgery safer for patients. “Listerine” was formulated by Dr. Joseph Lawrence and Jordan Wheat Lambert in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1879 as surgical antiseptic, it was given to dentists for oral care in 1895 It was later sold, in distilled form, as both a floor cleaner and a cure for gonorrhoea. But it wasn't a runaway success until the 1920s, when it was advertised as a solution for "chronic halitosis"— a then obscure medical term for bad breath.. In just seven years, the company's revenues rose from $115,000 to more than $8 million.. In 1885, Lawrence sold his share to the Lambert Pharmacal Company. Listerine was packaged in a glass bottle inside a corrugated cardboard tube for nearly 80 years before the first revamps were made to the brand. In 1992, Cool Mint Listerine was introduced in addition to the original Listerine Antiseptic formula and, in 1994, both brands were introduced in plastic bottles for the first time. . From 1921 until the mid-1970s, Listerine was also marketed as a preventive and remedy for colds and sore throats. In 1976, the Federal Trade Commission ruled that these claims were misleading, Originally marketed by the Lambert Pharmacal Company (which later became Warner-Lambert), since 2006 it is manufactured and distributed by Johnson & Johnson In 2009, Johnson and Johnson launched a new alcohol-free version of the product called Listerine Zero. The following year, a crucial discovery was made: borosilicate, a heat and chemically resistant glass.By it’s 25th year anniversary, the company had grown from an experimental glass factory into an internationally renowned manufacturer of optical and industrial glasses. Soon to be added was fiolax, tube-shaped glass used for vials, ampoules and syringes thus allowing the company to play a significant role in supplying Europe's nascent pharmaceutical industry. During WW2 Company was taken over for military use, and in 1945 given to the Russians as East Germany - GDR. , US troops transfer the "brain trust" of Jenaer Glas to Mainz in West and In Jena , East Germany, in 1948 the company became a state-owned "property of the people." The West German company becomes Schott Glaswerk, while the people in Jena, GDR, shorten their name to Jenaer Glaswerk. When the Berlin Wall comes down in 1989 Germany is united once again and in 1991 the company is joined and the Jena factory is brought up-to-date by 1994.This 10ml clear glass, graduated cylinder for laboratory tests, set in a plastic pentagonal base, is made of borosilicate glass. It has a pouring lip. The wide pentagonal shaped base provides stability and makes the cylinder roll-resistant. agr / ? Saccharin is an artificial sweetener. The basic substance, benzoic sulfilimine, has effectively no food energy and is much sweeter than sucrose, but has a bitter or metallic aftertaste, especially at high concentrations. It is used to sweeten products such as drinks, candies, , medicines, and toothpaste. Saccharin derives its name from the word "saccharine", meaning of, relating to, or resembling sugar. The form used as an artificial sweetener is usually its sodium salt. Saccharin was produced first in 1878 by Constantin Fahlberg, a chemist working on coal tar derivatives in Ira Remsen's laboratory at the Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland USA. Although saccharin was commercialized not long after its discovery, it was not until sugar shortages during World War I that its use became widespread. Sigma was founded by two Melbourne pharmacists in 1912, it has grown to become one of the key players in Australia’s pharmacy industry .Edwin Thomas Church (1864 – 1947) and Ernest Holloway Leete a prominent chemist and a member of the College of Pharmacy who had established his own pharmacy in 1897. The entrepreneurial Leete had been part of a move in 1904 among a group of commercially-minded chemists to put up proprietary preparations. 1913 - 1927 Initially, the fortunes of the Sigma enterprise relied on E. H. Leete ‘working from home’, and even as late as 1915 company address was in Claremont Avenue Malvern. Following the establishment of the business in 1912, the Sigma Company Limited was located at Flinders Lane, Melbourne. Sigma – Tromax, 1928 E.H. Leete after sixteen years, said he would not stand again as a director of the company because interests were also turning elsewhere. He was assisting another company as its agent in the motor trade. 1938 to1953 was characterised by steady growth for Sigma, accelerated by manufacturing opportunities during World War Two. Between 1975 and 1996 the company was transformed as it entered a period of both consolidation and rapid growth. The appointment, in 1996, of new Managing Director, George Savvides, marked a break from the past. Today Sigma is a leading full line wholesale and distribution business to pharmacy.
