The speedway located on the Maribyrnong Reserve, Maribyrnong was built in 1946, on what had been an undeveloped football ground. The first public race held at the raceway was in October 1946, in front of approximately 7,000 spectators, and quickly became a major venue for solo motorcycles, sidecars, and midget speedcars. Soon after opening, the track was taken over by the Kirjon Speedway Company, and was renamed the Kirjon Speedway. Fred Tracey, a well known solo motorcycle racer and winner of the 1947 Victorian Solo Championship, took over the venue around 1951, renaming it Tracey’s Speedway. Tracey’s Speedway closed in 1963, ending nearly two decades of racing. This sculpture of Fred Tracey, in honour of his contribution to speedway racing, is located in the Highpoint City Shopping Centre, Rosamond Road, Maribyrnong. Cr. Albert George Pennell served as Shire President of Braybrook in 1946. He was elected at a council meeting that year and represented the Western Riding of the shire. His tenure is part of the broader civic history of Braybrook, which later became part of the City of Sunshine and, following council amalgamations in 1995, the City of Maribyrnong. This silver cup was presented to the Shire of Braybrook by Cr. Albert George Pennell and his wife to commemorate their visit to the Borough of Maidstone, Kent September 1950. Pennell Reserve - Originally known as the Braybrook Reserve and it was renamed to Pennell Reserve in 1951. The reserve was going to be named as the "Albert Pennell Reserve" after a Shire of Braybrook Councillor. The name was shortened to just Pennell Reserve to recognize the contribution that the Pennell family has made to the district. Bone Dust & Tallow Manufacturer and Braybrook resident Cr. George William Pennell. He was the Braybrook Shire President for eight terms 1917-1918, 1919-1920,1923-1924, 1926-1927, 1931-1932, 1932-1933, 1942-1943 & 1946-1947. George Zachary Parnis migrated to Melbourne from Malta in 1964, arriving with his brother Manny. George was 19 years old at the time. The family later became well-established in Melbourne’s western suburbs. George Zachary Parnis became a councillor of the former City of Sunshine (Victoria), active in local government before the council’s amalgamation in 1995. Braybrook was originally part of the former Shire of Braybrook and later the City of Sunshine. However, in 1994, Victoria underwent council amalgamations, which resulted in Braybrook being incorporated into the City of Maribyrnong. No formal name has been assigned to this reserve. From research, which is still to be confirmed, it is believed the Deer Park Lions Club installed the infrastructure in the area, which includes the wooden path, table and bench seat, therefore for convenience we will refer to it as the Lions Club Reserve. Situated on the west bank of the Kororoit Creek, it lies directly opposite the Deer Park Hotel, where a swimming hole once enjoyed popularity among the early residents of Deer Park. Unfortunately, as the surrounding areas were developed for residential and industrial requirements, along came pollution that made these holes unsafe to swim in. The use of these holes were discouraged in the mid 1900's and subsequently the local Councils of the district started to provide man made swimming pools such as the ones located in Sunshine and St. Albans.
