The history of the InterContinental Mark Hopkins San Francisco is rooted in the Gilded Age mansion built by railroad tycoon Mark Hopkins on Nob Hill, which burned down after the 1906 earthquake. The current hotel was constructed in its place and opened in 1926, retaining the opulent spirit of its predecessor through its Renaissance Revival-style architecture and historical features, such as the "Top of the Mark" lounge. One of San Francisco’s "Big Four," Mark Hopkins was among those who founded what became the great Southern Pacific Railroad. In 1925, mining engineer and hotel investor George D. Smith bought the land where the Hopkins estate was built with the desire to build a luxury hotel. San Franciscans declared the new “Mark Hopkins Hotel” to be, "architecturally perfect, flawless in its erection, comprehensive in its accommodations, strikingly representative of the best there is in modern hostelry." The Mark Hopkins Hotel quickly became an immediate part of San Francisco’s rich and colorful history. Mark REID Mark Reid began working in clay in the early 1980. He was working for a time at Kairi Pottery in North Queensland. In 1985, Mark and Robyn Reid established Torvil Pottery at Buninyong, Victoria. In 1991 he relocated to a 10 acre property in nearby Magpie and set up the Ballarat Clayfire Gallery. This menorah has 7 candle holders joined in a horizontal row, on thin rod stands. The circular holders sit on two flat silver strips that are attached to silver rectangles on either side of the holders, creating a shield-like form on either side of the holder. The stand on which this construction is propped up, is made up of rods that stand vertically on either side of the holders and behind the shields. The rods are intersected by other rod 'lines' that visually weave horizontally across the top half of the stand. Each point of intersection of lines and rod stands is marked by a circular shape. Artist's statement: In terms of the Jewish diaspora, the variety and flexibility of approaches within Judaism has enabled the culture to endure and nurture ever stronger connections despite physical distance. This notion of an enriched connectedness was one of the two central ideas which contributed to the development of this piece. The second was the idea of light and its cultural significance. Light is about both practical illumination and spiritual expression. While revealing and manipulating material and form, light has also come to stand for the triumph of goodness over evil for many cultures, Of utmost importance in Jewish ritual, light and its media are also recognised symbols of connection and interaction for Jewish people throughout the world. Tour undertaken by the TMSV to cellebrate No. 27 reaching 1,000,000 miles in Ballarat. Has a photo of the tram No. 27 at the depot (see item 3316 for a black and white print) and a photo of some of the travellers from the TMSV inside the tram (see item 3317) for details of the people. Due to a clerical error, it was later found that the tram had not reached that mark.Yields information about the No. 27 that was thought to have reached 1000,000 miles in Ballarat during 1968 - actually found out later to be an error - was about 900,000 miles. The Insul-cot Mark 1 is a historically significant, early portable infant incubator designed by South Australian engineer and inventor Edward Thomas (Ted) Both and his broher Donald in the 1950s. It was engineered to overcome high premature infant mortality rates in Australian hospitals by providing a clean, temperature-controlled environment while allowing easy access to the baby.
