Glenelg Shire Council Cultural CollectionFunctional object - Walker's 'Excelsior' Yacht Log Mark II, Thomas Walker, c. 1900
... Walker's 'Excelsior' Yacht Log Mark II...Functional object Walker's 'Excelsior' Yacht Log Mark II Thomas Walker ...From Scarborough Maritime Heritage Centre: A Yacht Log was a nautical instrument for measuring a vessel's speed and distance travelled. When navigating a ship it is essential to be able to estimate the boat's speed and distance travelled to determine its position at sea. In times past the only way to measure a ship's speed was to throw a wood log into the water and observe how fast it moved away from the ship. In the 16th century, the log was fastened to a rope knotted at set intervals. The log was thrown over the stern (back) of the vessel and a crew member counted the number of knots that were paid out in a set time. From this they could estimate the speed of the vessel through the water. This was known as streaming the log and is also the derivation of the knot as a measurement of nautical speed. In 1878, Thomas Ferdinand Walker (1837–1921), an engineer in Birmingham, patented a mechanical log in which a recording instrument was attached to a rail at the stern of a vessel connected by a long cord with a rotor which was towed behind the ship. The instrument dial recorded the distance travelled. The 'Log' at the Heritage Centre was recovered from a skip in Scarborough and was one of the first artefacts collected by the volunteer group. It is made of brass with a ceramic dial, with the main scale marked from 0 to 100 nautical miles and an inset dial marked from 0 to 10 miles. It has a fixing plate, on which it can turn, with which it would have been attached to the 'taffrail', the rail at the stern of a ship, usually on the starboard side. The Walker’s Excelsior Mark IV instrument was designed for smaller vessels, such as yachts, launches and fishing vessels. Its exact date of manufacture cannot be determined but this design was manufactured in the first half of the 20th century. These mechanical logs have now been superseded by electronic equipment such as GPS navigation instruments. This instrument was made by a significant nautical instrument manufacturer and demonstrates the innovation needed at the time for improved navigation and safety at sea.Timber Box containing an instrument for measuring speed and distance. There is a brass, cased log with a white enamel dial. It also includes a towing cord and cylindrical rotator. The box has paper labelling on the front and also the inside of the lid. The label on the inside of the lid has instructions for use. Although the lid is hinged it has broken off and is separate. The hinges remain attached.Enamel Dial: Walkers Patent Excelsior Yacht Logmaritime, maritime history, tool, navigational tool, navigational instrument, navigation, sailing, walkers, maritime technology, walker & son -

City of StonningtonKatherine Hattam, Doctor's Dilemma Mark II, 2007
... Doctor's Dilemma Mark II...Stonnington contemporary art collection Mixed Media Feminism Domesticity Autobiography Psychology Collage Literature Landscape Painting Post-modern Katherine Hattam Doctor's Dilemma Mark II Katherine Hattam ...Katherine Hattam is an established Australian artist who attended the University of Melbourne and the Victorian College of the Arts where she studied painting. Hattam’s work encompasses themes of feminism, domesticity, time, autobiography and psychology. Doctor’s Dilemma, Mark II, 2007 is a strong representation of Hattam’s interest in landscape painting, collage, literature, feminism, psycho-analysis and post-modern critical thinking. Featuring disassembled medical and psychology books removed from her family’s library and other sources, floating medical instruments and interior domestic elements, the title of this work refers to an early twentieth century play by Bernard Shaw of the same name. It centres on the moral dilemma a doctor faces when triaging who receives life-saving medicine and the economic realities of a medical life. In this way, Doctor’s Dilemma, Mark II can be viewed as an autobiographical account of growing up as the daughter of a doctor who eventually left the medical world in pursuit of the art world. Hattam has strong ties with Stonnington, having grown up in South Yarra and attended school in Toorak. Hattam’s son, William McKinnon, is also an artist and is represented in the Stonnington Art Collection. stonnington contemporary art collection, mixed media, feminism, domesticity, autobiography, psychology, collage, literature, landscape, painting, post-modern, katherine hattam -

Fluotec Mark II by Pentec, with stand. Royal Children's Hospital Equipment Vaporiser ...The Fluotec vaporizer was made to administer only halothane (Fluothane). It was one of the first vaporizers made for use with only one anesthetic, and one of the first to use a bimetallic coil for temperature compensation. The bimetallic coil is part of the valve that controls how much of the carrier gas enters the vapor chamber to vaporize the anesthetic.Modern vaporisers still use this bimetallic coil technology today. Serial No: 5040 Patent No: 814427 A ready reference “calibration card” came attached to these vaporizers. The card was printed with a scale that indicated the concentration of halothane produced at different flow rates and dial settings. This item does not have a reference card with it.This Flotec vaporiser holds historic significance as a very good example of an early model piece of equipment for halothane only administration. Modern vaporisers still use the bimetallic coil technology and therefore this object has scientific and research significance.Small metal stand with 3 rubber feet, Main metal cylinder body housing the bimetallic coil. ... Mark II rules were manufactured in Australia by W & G (Melbourne). ...Mark II rules were manufactured in Australia by W & G (Melbourne). ...The Mark II Pilot Balloon Slide Rule was made of wood laminated with heavy white plastic with a length of 24.5-in. and width of 2.5 inches. Mark II rules were manufactured in Australia by W & G (Melbourne). The W & G rule differs only slightly from the English A. G. Thornton LTD rule. The W & G rule uses serif fonts and has some fiducial marks that the English rule lacks. Exact dates of production are not known but the MK II is known to have started production by 1927. The printed scales are engraved in the plastic faces. The slide rule has 4 captive cursors (glass windows and brass guides) that ride in slots on the top and bottom edges. Each can be moved independently of one another. The cursors are missing from this item. Brass knobs at both ends of the slide facilitate its movement. The case is fabric covered wood with felt lining. No known history for this item as located in a property after purchase. The Pilot Balloon slide rule is used to convert the observed azimuth and elevation readings into wind velocity and direction records. The use of slide rules was abandoned with the wide spread adoption of computers and programs to do the calculations, as well as the decline in the use of optical pilot balloon theodolites.Made in Australia by White & Gillespie (Melb) Pty Ltd. Established in 1910, the firm was involved mainly in printing plate manufacture, but during the Second World War it manufactured a variety of navigational aids and range finding devices for the military. About 250,000 instruments were made during that period. After the war the company produced, among other items, drawing instruments and slide rules. The long narrow case is fabric covered wood with felt fabric lining containing a long black laminate ruler with numerous white markings and numbers. Top of the ruler is in three sections with the centre section movable by small gold metal knobs at either end. This slide rule contains a engraved notation on the rear face "IMPORTANT. NORMALLY NUMBER OF GRATICULE SCALE DIVISIONS PER RADIAN (K) X LENGTH OF TAIL IN FEET (I) = 12X 105.
