Pigs were taken to Bairnsdale by coaxing them with maize thrown from a wagonette . From Bairnsdale they were freighted to market by train. The journey to Bairnsdale took about five days . This method of transport continued until the rail line to Orbost was opened in 1916. A slide image of the old Legacy House in Market Street from 1957. It shows children and people gathered to go on an outing to the sea known for many years as Operation Float. Legacy rented the Market St premises for many years. A small 'Legacy House' sign can just be seen between the bus and the sign post. It was part of the Western Market complex that was demolished and redeveloped in the early 1960s. Legacy held meeting and the girls classes on the second floor of the building but it was barely fit for purpose. In the 1940s a generous donation by an anonymous donor meant Legacy could purchase a building at 342 Swanston St, but due to several factors were never able to inhabit it. Finally it was sold in 1954 and Junior Legacy Melbourne purchased 289-299 Swanston Street Melbourne (previously called Red Cross House) in 1956 from the Commonwealth Government. As part of the conditions of the donation it was named in memory of David H Dureau. Renovations were needed to the 289-299 Swanston St building so this slide shows that Legacy were still in the Market St building in 1957 while they occurred. Penleigh Boyd, Robin and Patricia Boyd's son, writes “Prior to 1950 Robin, like most other amateur or hobby photographers, took black and white printed photographs. The oldest slides date from 1950 when Robin and Patricia travelled to Europe on Robin’s Robert Haddon Travelling Scholarship.” In 1948 Robin Boyd was awarded ‘joint first place’ in the Robert Haddon competition for his design of Mildura art gallery. The scholarship helped fund their first overseas trip. Robin and Patricia were passengers on the Greek ship “Cyrenia” departing in May 1950, passing through the Suez Canal and landing in Genoa five weeks later. For six months, they travelled extensively throughout Europe (predominantly driving themselves) - France, Italy, United Kingdom, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Spain.Colour slide in a mount. The Eltham Community Art & Craft Market was a long-standing weekend market in the Eltham area, offering, at first, arts and crafts of many types, made by local residents. It expanded to include produce in later years. Initially run by the Eltham Community Market Stallholders Association Incorporated, it is now run by Diamond Valley Community Support. The stall holder, Andrew Vlassopoulos (Kiourkiouris), was one of four brothers who operated three fruit stalls in the Queen Victoria market from the early 1920s to the late 1950s. They were from the village of Lahos on Ithaca and migrated in the early years of the twentieth century. Andrew left the retail side of the fruit market when he bought a market garden and continued to work in the wholesale market where he sold his produce to other fruit stalls and shop owners.A black and white photograph of a fruit stall in the Queen Victoria market on a market day. This photograph features three display board sections showing information and photographs from 'The Harvest' exhibition inside the Burke Museum at Beechworth in 1999. The two accompanying photographs depict a man and woman picking fruit.This photograph is of social significance to Burke Museum and the Beechworth community, documenting an exhibition, The Harvest, held in 1999 to communicate the importance of agricultural development, specifically of orchards, in the area. The expansion of vineyards and horticulture in the Beechworth district followed gold rush prosperity in the mid-1850s, with nearly ninety acres of gardens and small farms under vineyards by 1865. There were 400 Chinese market gardeners and hawkers in the area in 1868. This Plateway Wagon was built by Pengelly's Carriage Works, North Brighton 1883. The wagon was owned by the Corrigan family, market gardeners in Noble Park. It is an original, timber horse-drawn wagon that used the the Plateway or Wheelway from 1890. These heavily laden market gardener’s carts could travel relatively smoothly and safely, along the steel rails on the main roads of Moorabbin Parish to Melbourne and St Kilda markets to sell their produce, at a time when the road surfaces were rutted and hazardous.After the Henry Dendy Special Survey of the Parish of Moorabbin in 1841, land was sold to pioneer settlers who developed market gardens, vineyards and fruit gardens ( orchards ). These market gardeners took their produce in heavily laden horse-drawn Wagons along the steel Plateway to the markets in St Kilda and Melbourne. An original, timber horse-drawn wagon of a type that used the Plateway or Wheelway. The steel rails of the Plateway played such an important role from the 1890’s in the transportation of produce along the City of Moorabbin’s major roads, (including Centre Road, Bentleigh), to reach the markets in St Kilda and Melbourne.
