This photo of Alice Maud Marsh has traditionally been associated with the Marsh family that operated a butcher's shop on the corner of Edgevale Road and Fitzwilliam Street, Kew.Cabinet card. Studio portrait of Alice Marsh, J.E. Marsh whose family owned Marsh's Butcher Shop in Edgevale Road from 1915 to 1970. Previously the butcher shop had been owned by Mr Charlie Watson. Alice managed the shop until about 1928, when she became quite ill in about 1924 and died in 1930. This image shows the house occupied by Thomas Mason and his family in 1883. The man in the centre of the image holding the reins of the horse is possibly Thomas Mason. One of the two women seated in the buggy is possibly his wife Catherine Mason (nee Whelan). This house was built by grazier George Palmer Hall around 1846-1848 north of what is now Lerderderg Street, Bacchus Marsh, at a point close to the Lerderderg RIver. The house and the accompanying farm of over 5,000 hectares was leased by George Ball to George Hobler in the late 1840s and early 1850s. During this time George Hobler's daughter Emily married Henry Bacchus the son of Captain William Bacchus. By 1865 Thomas Mason had purchased the property. Mason named the property Riverton. After his death in the 1890s the property was owned by a number of different people. The house was still in use until 1999 but since this time has been unoccupied and its condition has significantly deteriorated.This image is significant because it depicts one of the earliest houses built in the town of Bacchus Marsh. It is probably the earliest surviving image of this Bacchus Marsh pre-gold rush structure.Small sepia unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. The Harvest Home Hotel was licensed as a beer shop in 1866. Patrick Vallence was the licensee. On his death in 1874 his widow Mrs M. A. Vallence obtained the license. The date that this image was created has not been identified. Around 1883 George Marshall was leasing the hotel. The people in this image are could be members of the Marshall family and some of the staff who worked in the hotel at this time. Following a decrease in the population of Bacchus Marsh by 1911 the hotel had lost its licence. The Vallence family still owned the building after the loss of the hotel license in 1911and it was used for some years after this as a private residence by some members of the Vallence family. The building appears to be of stone with decorative stonework corners. A verandah is inset to the left of a gabled front section which has its own door and window. This image is one of a series of photographs taken by Melbourne based photographers Stevenson and McNicoll who visited Bacchus Marsh nearby districts between September and November 1883. The Royal Hotel was built in 1861 and is located on the corner of Main and Young Streets in Bacchus Marsh. The first owner was James Murray and the hotel was first known as the Murray Family Hotel. James Murray died in an accident in 1863 and sometime after this the ownership passed to Richard Manning. From around 1869 it became known as the Royal Hotel. Richard Manning's son Frederick Manning inherited the hotel in 1896. The Manning family owned the hotel until sometime after 1945. In more recent decades it has been owned and operated by a number of different people. The hotel continues to operate as of 2024. This image shows the building in its original structure. In 1888, five years after this image was taken, a second storey was added to the section on Young Street. In this image this section is the single storey section of wall without windows to the right of the picture. This plan of land allotments for sale indicates the property once owned by the Bacchus family in and around the township area of Bacchus Marsh. The Bacchus family sold their property in Bacchus Marsh to John Atkins and Robert Nalder Clarke in March 1851. Atkins and Clarke kept the property for a number of years until April 1856 when these allotments were put up for sale.This plan is almost identical to another copy held by the Bacchus Marsh and District Historical Society, VC Record 707, BMDHS collection). This plan, VC Record 452 Copy 2, contains a less detail than than VC Record 707 Copy 1. For example the selling agents and the surveyor who created the plan are not indicated on this copy of the plan. This copy of the plan does indicate the name Crook Street on the map. As the Crook family were the buyers of the Manor House property and surrounding land from Atkins and Clarke in 1856 it suggests that this copy is a later one of the earlier version. It is unlikely that the Crook family would have had the adjacent street named after them prior to purchasing the house and property. This is a very early land sales plan for the township of Bacchus Marsh and it therefore provides some clues as to how the early urban development of the township took place. Upon seeing the map in 1911 Bacchus Marsh Express newspaper editor Christopher Crisp wrote "The sale appears to have created the present township, which had a nucleus in earlier times further east", Express, 30 September, 1911, page 3. This handmade pinafore was worn by the donor, Ellen Brown, at her christening in 1905. It was made by Ellen's grandmother, Mrs Beeching, for the first daughter born in the Fagg family. The pinafore was a treasured family heirloom, and was not worn again. It is a rare example of a modest, homemade christening costume. Most costumes were gowns, but this humble pinafore still shows loving attention to detail.The connection between milestone moments and the wearing of a particular garment carries great significance. The christening gown represents the rites of passage: great importance is placed on the clothing, as well as the ceremony.This is a white cotton infant's christening pinafore, round neck with a flounce, sleeveless with a sash attached at the front and tied at the back. There are lace inserts and lace at the hemline. The Grantbank Estate was a parcel of land close to the centre of the shopping area of Bacchus Marsh which was sub-divided and offered for sale in 58 lots on the 13th September, 1924. It comprised an area of 15 acres, being a portion of the Millbank Estate which had been in the hands of the Grant family for 75 years. The lots had frontages to Gisborne Road, Patterson, William and Sutherland Streets. This was a significant sub-division of land and represented a major expansion of residential housing in Bacchus Marsh in the early 20th century.This land sale map is a typical example of housing estate land sales advertising maps produced by real estate agents in this era. The Nerowie Estate was a large rural property of 8,700 acres (3520 hectares) near the locality of Parwan only a few kilometers east of Bacchus Marsh. This land sales plan shows allotments of land offered for sale in the inner township area of Bacchus Marsh in 1908. The land put up for sale was from the estate of the late Mr and Mrs J.E. Crook. That being James Elijah Crook and his wife Harriet, (nee Athorn). The Crooks had been resident in Bacchus Marsh since the 1840s and were prominent members of the community. They were prominent in the business, social and civic affairs of the town and district. In the 1850s the Crooks acquired the Manor House and nearby land once owned by the Bacchus family. James Crook died in 1889. When Harriet Crook died in February 1908 their estate was offered for sale. This included the large stone home known as the Manor House and various parcels of land including around 50 allotments of land near the Manor House, bounded by Young, Lerderderg, Crook and Main Streets. Most of these allotments of land were sold in October 1908. The Manor House itself was passed in at the sale and continued to be owned by the Crook family for several decades after 1908.A single page map on a single page of a bound volume of maps. The family group in this image is the Burnip family. George Burnip came to Australia in 1854. In 1856 he married Julia Grant. Sometime after this he came to the Bacchus Marsh area and purchased a farm near Coimadai and named it 'The Pines'. George Burnip was active in public affairs as a member of School Board of Advice and the Agricultural Society. One of the two men in this image is likely to be George Burnip, probably the man on the left. The man standing on the right is possibly his son, John, who would have been 22 at the time this photo was taken. The woman seated on a chair placed on the pathway is probably Mrs Julia Burnip. The woman standing with her arms crossed is possibly Mrs Julia Carroll (nee Burnip). Allan Arnup was born in Bacchus Marsh in 1913. In 1929 he began work at the Bacchus Marsh Express newspaper as an apprentice printer. Over several decades he worked there as a printer, foreman and eventually as a manager. The Express newspaper, founded in 1866, was printed in Bacchus Marsh for over 100 years. The Express also provided a general printing service for the community in addition to printing copies of the Express newspaper. This unpublished manuscript was written around 1990 and looks back on Arnup's long career as a printer and manager with the Bacchus Marsh Express newspaper and printing business.Manuscript. This image shows one of the busiest intersections of Bacchus Marsh, the corner of Main and Grant Streets. The main building shown in the image is Simon Brothers Motor Service and Cycle Depot. In 1903 the Simon brothers, Herbert (Bert) and Walter began making Monarch bicycles and later Monarch motor cycles. In 1913 they moved into newly constructed premises shown in this image. The business operated as both a garage, service station and cycle depot. The business operated until 1948 when P. S. Carey brought the premises to expand his Grant Street car dealership business which was located next to the Simon Brothers garage. The Millbank Estate was a parcel of land close to the centre of the shopping area of Bacchus Marsh which was sub-divided and offered for sale in 62? lots on the 4th October 1888. The lots had frontages to Ballarat Road (Main Street), Maddingley Road (now Grant Street), Turner Street, Millbank Street, Clarinda Road (now Clarinda Street), and an unnamed street south of Turner Street (possibly known as Grant Street at this time) which connected to Maddingley Road through the vicinity of the present day Bacchus Marsh Hospital. This was a significant sub-division of land and represented a major expansion of residential housing in Bacchus Marsh in the late 19th century. The map includes a wealth of detail about the time of the sale, where it will take place, who the selling agents were, the deposit terms for purchases and details of a special train from Melbourne to Bacchus Marsh on sale day. The location of the allotments in relation to the shopping and commercial area of Bacchus Marsh, Maddingley and the railway station are indicated on an inset map within the overall map and poster. The Millbank Estate area was an area which had once belonged to the Grant family who were prominent early citizens of Bacchus Marsh and lived in a house in this area known as 'Millbank'.This land sale map is a typical example of housing estate land sales advertising maps produced by real estate agents in this era. The Border Inn located on the corner of Main Street and Graham Street Bacchus Marsh opened in 1851 making it a very early hotel in Victoria. It was built and owned by John Pilmer. The first licensee was James Watt. The building has been added to and changed many times. It was originally a single storey building. A second storey was added in 1863 by John Pilmer. In 1866 the hotel was purchased by Edward Jones. The Jones family owned and operated the hotel until 1939. Additional second storey sections were added in 1883, 1904 and 1936. For a number of years the Border Inn was a stopping post for coaching services between Melbourne and Ballarat. The first licensee of the hotel James Watt was among the first in Victoria to offer a regular coaching service and his hotel was used for overnight accommodation by coach travellers. At the time this picture was taken coach services were still operating between Bacchus Marsh and other locations. The coach in this picture is possibly one of those coaches.This building has been documented as of state significance by Richard Peterson and Daniel Catrice in their 1995 heritage study for the then Shire of Bacchus Marsh. Their assessment of the heritage significance of the building was: "The Border Inn is of state historical significance as a pioneering pre-gold rush building, on the route to the Ballarat goldfields. It is the representative-embodiment of several historical periods and their way of life. It demonstrates a complex changing sequence of patterns of occupancy and architectural styles. Its development at this location, demonstrates the effect of a social movement, the gold rush, as a transport stopover.It is also historically significant for its association with the first rural public transport in Victoria. Locally, the hotel is significance for its association with the first meeting of municipal government, and also for its social significance as a traditional community, visitor focus and meeting place".Small sepia unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. Tennent), and on the right side of the plan near the Lerderderg River is indicated the general area for a second parcel of land from this sale which is to be sold. There is also a compass illustration indicating north and south compass points.This is a very early land sales plan for the township of Bacchus Marsh and it therefore provides some clues as to how the early urban development of the township took place. Upon seeing the map in 1911 Bacchus Marsh Express newspaper editor Christopher Crisp wrote "The sale appears to have created the present township, which had a nucleus in earlier times further east", Express, 30 September, 1911, page 3.A single page paper plan showing allotments of land for sale. The quilt was made by Ada Maud Allen, the grandmother of the donor. Mrs Allen was from a Queensland wool growing property and was a prolific wool quilter. She was noted for her quilt making and also made items such as dressing gowns. She exhibited at many country shows and with the Queensland Country Women's Association. The wool used in the quilt was from her own property. The quilt was made in the 1930s and subsequently used by Mrs Allen's children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.Wool quilt made by Ada Maud Allen, c.1930s.
