Mary, who served in the Middle East recalls living under canvas in snowy conditions. Cate stated that so many people were rushing to return to their families after the war that they didn't mention half the things wrong with them and the paperwork was never done, so many didn't get the treatments they deserved. He went on to tell a gathering of women veterans at Parliament House during the Australia Remembers ceremonies that the 67,000 women who enlisted, the 250,000 women who worked in factories and the 7,000 working in the Women's Land Army had been essential in the fight for freedom. Women served in the London blitz, North Africa, Singapore, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, New Britian and Borneo. Also among them was Jean Syres and Mary Canty, who between them, served with the VAD in Palestine, Syria, Egypt and Papua New Guinea. Giving the address on behalf of all female veterans was May Douglas, the only surviving director of women's army services, served in Australia and Papua New Guinea.
