Ill, maps, plans, p.181.non-fictionOn the 22nd of April 1995 more than 4,000 Rwandans were massacred and thousands more injured in a place called Kibeho. Terry Pickard, a seasoned soldier and medic, was one of a 32-strong force of Australian UN peacekeepers in Kibeho on that terrible Saturday. While the United Nations’ presence prevented the death toll from being even worse than it was, the massacre continues to haunt him. The rules of engagement that stopped him from intervening in the senseless slaughter, and the life and death decisions he was forced to make when dealing with the injured condemned him to more than a decade of recurring nightmares and debilitating flashbacks. The horror and unimaginable tragedy of the Kibeho Massacre still looms large in the lives of Rwandans and the people sent to help the African country. No one who walked away from that day was ever the same again. Combat Medic is a personal account of one Australian soldier who found himself at the centre of events that shocked the world, and the personal toll that he paid. Terry Pickard’s army career spanned nearly 20 years. More than 25 years after Rwanda he continues to struggle with post traumatic stress triggered by his experiences. John McEwen repaired the Pompeii Fountain statue at Fortuna Villa in the early 1970s after it was damaged by gunfire in the 1960s. He was a ceramics teacher at Bendigo Institute of TAFE, later a farrier, and a volunteer teacher in outback NSW.In 2008, John and his wife Helen revisited Fortuna Villa to see his restoration work. The "Statue Massacre" IncidentShooting IncidentIn the early 1960s, a National Serviceman allegedly used a .303 rifle to shoot several statues at Fortuna Villa, possibly while intoxicated. There is some uncertainty about the exact timing and presence of National Servicemen on site, with conflicting accounts about when the incident could have occurred. Multiple statues were damaged or destroyed, but one original statue from the Lansell era survived. A notable surviving statue was of a boy carrying a basket, which sometimes caused confusion due to its lifelike appearance. John McEwen was contacted by two military men in the early 1970s to repair the damaged statue. The statue was made of compressed cement and was badly fragmented, with the front and left arm destroyed and the head separated but intact. John constructed a metal armature for the missing arm, used chicken wire for structure, and rebuilt the statue with cement mixed with Plastibond adhesive. Plastibond remains a commonly used material for such repairs.Fortuna - History Note "The Great Fortuna Statue Massacre" - Visit by John and Helen McEwen on Feb 25 2008 This item contains the following documents: 11217.78a Colour photo of Helen and John McEwen with the statue in the background 11217.78a Colour photo of the statue 11217.78a Two sided sheet labelled Fortuna Villa Historical Note 001 Fortuna "The Great Fortuna Statue Massacre"non-fictionbendigo, fortuna, george lansell, helen and john mcewen

In around 1924 a band of Gija people crossed fences onto their traditional land near Bedford Downs Station in the East Kimberley 2000 km northeast of Perth and killed nine head of cattle. This act precipitated one of the massacres to become known as the 'killing times'. Paddy Quilty, the station owner of Bedford Downs had his men collect wagon loads of firewood which was distributed around the camp. He then invited everyone to assemble for their rations. The food, laced with strychnine, was handed out. As the Gija people fell down dying in agony, they were shot. The firewood was used to burn the bodies. One boy escaped to the the story. Paddy Jamin Jaminji (c.1922-1997) painted The Hills of Bedford Downs Station as part of a series of painting about the Killing Times. It depicts the story and sites of the massacre. At least twelve killing sites are recorded within a radius of 150 km of Turkey Creek, WA. The painting was possibly discarded due to its damage in one corner and later collected from an old shelter at Warmun on a field trip by collector Neil McLeod in 1995.Large painting on board of symbolic landscape. Frances Rigg was a local business identity in Kew, at one stage managing the local branch of the English, Scottish and Australian (ES&A) Bank at 175 High Street from c. 1920 until the 1940s. After Francis Rigg’s death, the collection of buttons and medallions was inherited by his son, Ken Rigg (1922-2014). The collection was subsequently donated to the Kew Historical Society in 2015 by Francis' grandson, Adrian Rigg, at the time of the Gallipoli & Beyond Commemoration in 2015. The collection covers a period of almost 40 years. The majority of the buttons are patriotic buttons, issued and sold during and immediately after the First World World War (1914-1918) to raise funds for national and overseas causes. The collection also includes a number of locally significant sporting event buttons and sporting club medallions, issued in the 1920s and 1930s.Patriotic and other pressed tin buttons and badges were produced in large numbers in the first decades of the twentieth century. By nature, insubstantial and ephemeral, they have not always survived. The collections of badges, buttons and medallions in the Kew Historical Society collection is homogenous and yet diverse, ranging from buttons sold to raise funds for the war efforts in 1914-18 and 1939-45, to those used at festivals and sporting events. Because of the manufacturing process, many surviving buttons and badges have been affected by inadequate storage, suffering from oxidisation and physical damage. These survivors are now historically and socially significant artefacts, revealing much about the attitudes and values of the period in which they were produced. Their widespread distribution means that they are frequently significant at a local, state, national and international level.Fundraising badge sold by the Commonwealth Button Fund to raise funds for the victims of the Armenian massacres in the Ottoman Empire during the war."Servia Syria Armenia"patriotic buttons, first world war (1914-18), badges
