Many of these are from 1980s and onwards, and must have been collected by Patricia Boyd/Davies. Matchbooks have been around since the late 1800’s and matchbook covers just as long. In the 1930s, the design of matchbooks changed again with the introduction of the “fold-over” style. Souvenir of Melbourne cable tram closure in Oct. 1940 - made to fit a box of matches to minimize damage to the box while being carried in a pocket. Consists of a printed photo of cable trailer 571 in Nicholson St Fitzroy with the Royal Exhibition buildings in the background. Lists the opening dates of the various lines. The matchbox is by Bryant and May, made in Britain. On the rear of the box is an advert for the Orient Line of Royal Mail steamers in Europe and Australia. Not know who made the matchbox holder. This tin matchbox was manufactured as a souvenir to commemorate the centenary of European settlement of Melbourne and Victoria in 1934-35. This celebration was important as a sign of better times after the 1930 Depression.This is an every-day souvenir item which can be linked to a significant celebration in Victoria. After a quiet period, interest in bookplates in Australia began to increase in the early 1970s, Entrepreneurial art and book collectors such as Edwin Jewell and others commissioned multiple Bookplate designs from a range of well known fine artists. At a 1997 meeting in Melbourne of the Ephemera Society of Australia Edwin Jewell and others announced the formation of the Australian Bookplate Society.
