This set of photos is from a leather bound album bearing the inscription "HUME RESERVOIR AUSTRALIA" plus 'The Rt. Hon. L. C. M. S. Amery, P. C., M .P.' all inscribed in gold. It was presented to The Rt. Hon. L. C. M. S. Amery, P. C., M. P, Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs on the occasion of his visit to the Hume Reservoir on 2nd November 1927. This album is of local and national significance as it documents the planning and development of the Hume Reservoir up to 1927. It was the largest water reservoir in the British Empire. The first stage in the construction of the Dam foundations was carried out inside the levee bank which was at a sufficient height to protect from floods the work going on inside. A length of 300 feet of the Dam was left at a low elevation to allow of the river flowing over it in the second stage of the operations and at the ends of the concrete was brought up above flood level. To divert the river, a Coffer Dam was built across the old bed above and below the Dam site and tying into the end of the concrete wall built inside the levee bank. The property is in the area that later became Delta Street, on the north side of Back Creek. Once roads were made and streets numbered, this became 1 Delta Road, Surrey Hills. Part of the undeveloped land would become part of South Surrey Park. According to Alan Holt's property register the house was built in c1920 and was demolished after having been neglected in 1991. He records it having had various names: 'Westward Ho', 'Pembroke' and 'The Oaks'. The first owner from 1920 was Eric Rowland Handyside Long who married Agnes May Hay Murray in March 1920. They had one son James Murray Long, born in September 1921. They divorced in 1937 and thereafter the property is listed in the name of Mrs Mary Hay Long, James M Long or Miss Mary Hay Long. According to Alan Holt, the house featured in the television series 'Carson's Law' in c1984.This is one of relatively few photos which record the transformation of rural land into the suburb that became Surrey Hills.A simple dark-stained timber house with a veranda and tiled roof. This document examines the controversial legacy of Dr. James Patrick Murray, focusing on his involvement in maritime violence and his surprising recognition by the Bendigo Council. Bendigo Council awarded Dr. Murray a bonus and a glowing reference 150 years ago, despite his alleged involvement in mass murder at sea. He received a £50 bonus (over $10,000 today) for his work during a public health crisis. Murray captained the brig Carl, which was involved in forcibly transporting islanders to work on Fiji's cotton plantations. Accounts describe extreme violence: when enslaved islanders resisted, Murray and his crew fired into the hold, drilled holes to shoot more easily, and disposed of bodies at sea—allegedly killing 70 people. Survivors were delivered to Fiji, and the crew received a large finder's fee. Murray was described as charming and confident, but also as cruel, treacherous, and deceitful by contemporary sources. He betrayed his own crew by testifying against them in exchange for immunity from prosecution. Some accounts of Murray's actions may be exaggerated or self-serving, as witnesses were also implicated in the crimes and may have sought to minimize their own roles. Murray was Irish-born, educated at Trinity College Dublin, and established as a Melbourne doctor before turning to risky ventures in the South Seas, drawn by the promise of wealth and adventure. The South Pacific at the time attracted many fugitives and outcasts seeking fortune or escape from the law. Despite his violent past, Murray returned to Victoria and maintained a respectable public image, with few aware of his connection to the notorious events in Fiji. In 1872, Bendigo faced a deadly smallpox outbreak.Dr. Murray was appointed with full authority to manage the crisis and was credited with successfully containing the outbreak, earning public gratitude and official praise. Shortly after his public health success, Murray was implicated in the slave trading of South Sea islanders, specifically through his involvement with the ship Carl. Court testimony revealed brutal methods used to capture islanders, including trickery and force. The scandal shocked the public, with widespread condemnation and questions about how Murray had been appointed to a position of trust. Victorian authorities and the press criticized Murray and those who had supported or employed him. Despite the revelations, the Bendigo council felt obligated to honor their promise of a bonus for his work during the outbreak, citing the importance of keeping their word. Murray did not return to Bendigo after the scandal broke, though he sent letters expressing gratitude and claiming to have reformed. His claims of redemption were met with skepticism and derision by the press. The ship Carl was seized, and several crew members were convicted and sentenced for their roles in the slave trading operation. The Hamilton service for the late King George V was held at Melville Oval on Tuesday 28 January 1936 at 3pm. King George V was born on 03 June 1865, and visited Hamilton in 1881. He ascended to the throne in May 1910, his coronation being held on 22 June 1911. May Sewell was born in Beechworth in 1917, her paternal grandparents had come to Beechworth from Ireland and her maternal grandparents from Scotland. She was the youngest of five siblings and the only one to be born in a hospital rather than at home. May loved growing up and living in Beechworth, and fondly recalls knowing all her neighbours, meeting friends at the pictures, attending girl guides, picking wildflowers around the gorge, participating keenly in the Church of England choir and dances, and the big Easter festivals. May worked various jobs before getting married. After leaving school at fifteen, May learnt dressmaking with Lal Anderson (and was delighted with her wage of two and six pence a week) and then went on to learn tailoring with Mr Charles. May then worked in the dining rooms at the Commercial Hotel and Hotel Nicholas. May was at the Hotel Nicholas for seven years but stopped when she got married as female employees were not asked to stay once they were married. May married her husband in 1944 and had known him since school. They went on to have six children, sadly three did not live past infancy. Her first children were twin girls who died six hours after birth. May briefly discusses the difficulty in grieving her twin daughters, the lack of available support, and the expectancy to carry on. Her next child, a son named Ian James, died when he was only ten months old from a tumour. May described Ian James as a lovely boy. May had multiple connections to the Zwar Brothers' Beechworth Tannery. Her father and then her three brothers worked there, and also her husband for a short period of time. The tannery was a major employer in Beechworth, and May having multiple family members employed by the tannery underlines the significant role of the tannery in Beechworth. May described her husband as very hardworking, he worked as a cleaner overnight at the Ovens and Murray Hospital for the Aged while during the day tended his cattle and sheep farm. This oral history recording was part of a project conducted by Jennifer Williams in the year 2000 to capture the everyday life and struggles in Beechworth during the twentieth century. This project involved recording seventy oral histories on cassette tapes of local Beechworth residents which were then published in a book titled: Listen to what they say: voices of twentieth century Beechworth. These cassette tapes were digitised in July 2021 with funds made available by the Friends of the Burke. Miss May Sewell’s account of her life in Beechworth is historically and socially significant to the cultural heritage of the region. May in reflecting on her experiences of leisure opportunities, town festivals, work available for women, leaving the workforce once married, the tannery, post-natal care, grief and child mortality provide essential historic, economic, social, and healthcare insights. May’s oral history recording is part of a larger collection of oral histories recorded by Jennifer Williams in 2000, collectively they provide invaluable insights into Beechworth during the 20th century, much of the information in these oral histories would be lost if not documented and missed in the interpretation of tangible objects. This is a digital copy of a recording that was originally captured on a cassette tape. The cassette tape is black with a horizontal white strip and is currently stored in a clear flat plastic rectangular container. Taken between 1928 and 1930, depicted is the Bethanga Bridge under construction. The Bridge was completed in 1930 and was built to assist residents of the Bethanga district to travel to Albury. Other bridges would become submerged by the backed-up water of the Murray and Mitta Rivers so the Bethanga bridge was built two miles above the Mitta Weir. The Bethanga Bridge was built north of the future Hume Dam which would be completed in 1936. At 2430 feet long, Bethanga Bridge was the longest road bridge in Australia at the time of its completion. The Bridge is 20 feet wide and made up of nine 270 feet long spans. Materials used include ten tons of paint for the steel works; 1600 tons of steel; 900 tons of timber for the decking; and reinforced concrete for the piers. The tender for the construction was awarded to C. Ruwolt Pty. Ltd., engineers who were located on Victoria Street, West Richmond. The contract was awarded for £71,890. It was predicted between 250 and 300 men would find employment on the project. The news was well received by trade unions at the time as there had been a drop in available engineering work.This photograph is historically significant as it depicts the progress of the Bethanga Bridge construction, which was important infrastructure for the area. This clock was made by Charles Frederick Falck who was a watchmaker and jeweller in Beechworth from 1863-1908. Falck was born in Körlin, Prussia on May 22nd in 1833 and died at the age of 75 in 1908. Ovens and Murray Advertiser, Beechworth: edition June 13, 1908 OBITUARY: Falck was brought up to the business of watch-making, in which he developed exceptional mechanical ingenuity. Attracted by the favourable prospects held out by the Australian discoveries of gold he, like many other young adventurous spirits, left his native land to seek his fortune in the great southern Eldorado, arriving in Adelaide in 1854, and shortly after came to Melbourne where he worked as a journeyman, and subsequently started in business on his own account. Feeling inclined to test his fortune on the goldfields, he went to Blackwood but, meeting with little success, he returned to Melbourne where he was married. In 1862, he moved to Beechworth, where he commenced business as watchmaker and gold-buyer. He then embarked in vine-growing on the Sydney road, but eventually resumed his business avocations. His skill in practical horology was evinced in a clock of his own design and manufacture, surmounted by a golden eagle, which was exhibited at the first Melbourne Exhibition in 1856, and which afterwards formed a pre-eminent attraction in the window of his business premises in Ford Street. For many years, he filled the position of timekeeper to the Beechworth Racing Club, with complete satisfaction also at various sports meetings. He leaves a family of six sons and one daughter (Mrs. Jas. Broadfoot) all arrived at maturity. The funeral, which was well attended by a number of residents, took place at the Beechworth Cemetery on Sunday, the burial service being performed by the Ven. Archdeacon Potter. The cortege was capably supervised by Mr. D. Wilson, undertaker. The clock was returned to Beechworth in 2020 through the generous support of the Copland Foundation. Given that Mr. C. F. Falck traded as a watchmaker and jeweller in Beechworth for 45 years and traded with the 1855 clock mounted in his front window, there is a direct link between the clocks and the social, cultural and economic life of nineteenth century Beechworth at time when the town was developing and expanding in response to gold mining. This clock represent the significant skill and expertise of Charles Falck as an horologist. Medium-sized pendulum clock featuring a carved gilt wood eagle with wings outstretch (épandre - expanded with wing-tips directed upwards) and perched above a pendulum rod that holds a silver dial clock face within a reeded sunburst surround. His skill in practical horology was evinced in a clock of his own design and manufacture, surmounted by a golden eagle, which was exhibited at the first Melbourne Exhibition in 1856, and which afterwards formed a pre-eminent attraction in the window of his business premises in Ford Street. For many years, he filled the position of timekeeper to the Beechworth Racing Club, with complete satisfaction also at various sports meetings. He leaves a family of six sons and one daughter (Mrs. Jas. Broadfoot) all arrived at maturity. The funeral, which was well attended by a number of residents, took place at the Beechworth Cemetery on Sunday, the burial service being performed by the Ven. Archdeacon Potter. The cortege was capably supervised by Mr. D. Wilson, undertaker. The clock was returned to Beechworth in 2020 through the generous support of the Copland Foundation and the Friends of the Burke. Given that Mr. C. F. Falck traded as a watchmaker and jeweller in Beechworth for 45 years and traded with the 1855 clock mounted in his front window, there is a direct link between the clocks and the social, cultural and economic life of nineteenth century Beechworth at time when the town was developing and expanding in response to gold mining. This clock represent the significant skill and expertise of Charles Falck as an horologist. Large swinging clock featuring a carved gilt wood eagle with its wings outstretched (abaisé - expanded with wing-tips lowered) and perched above a pendulum rod that holds a silvered dial clock face within a reeded sunburst surround. This photograph shows three generations of the Russell family in Orbost. On the left is John Russell with his son Bill Russell and his wife Ede and their son Ian. John Russell Senior was a blacksmith, wheelwright, farmer and chairman of the Orbost Butter Factory, makers of Sunny South Butter (today part of Murray Goulburn Co Ltd). Bill was born at Orbost in 1893, the youngest son of John and Elizabeth Maud (nee Clarke). Upon his father’s retirement he took over the homestead part of the holding, 1,000 acres of river flats and hill land. He was involved in dairying and was also a successful beef cattle breeder and maize grower. He was elected to the Orbost Shire Council in 1929 and shortly afterwards was President for 18 months (from May 1930 to August 1931). He served a further term as President in 1934-35. He represented the South riding. He was chairman of the Bean Board and a well-known horse and show judge and a member of the Royal Agricultural Society. He was an elocutionist of some note and a member of the committee of management of the Orbost Hospital. He was also a prominent member and Past Master of the Masonic Lodge and a Justice of the Peace. He served as president of the Orbost Golf Club and assisted with the preparation and layout of the present Orbost Golf course. This fossil was found by Peter Cook just west of East Cape at Cape Conran (east of Orbost),. Original correspondence re its identification came from Andy Murray - Conservation & Natural Resources, Orbost. It was on display at the Orbost Visitor Information Centre - the Slab Hut.A fossil tooth from a marine species.
