Robert Clark was a self educated man who had arrived in Australia with his step father to take up mining in 1854. He worked in several local mines and being familiar with the hardships associated with mining life helped to establish the eight hour day for miners. Robert married Sarah Jane Kernaghan in 1862 and together they had nine children. Robert Clark was first elected in 1872 and remained a councillor until his death in 1883. Harry Montague Marks was born at Pall Mall Bendigo on the 1st October 1855. At age 18 he worked for Goldsborough & Co in Melbourne learning land, wool and banking business. He returned to Bendigo aged 22 to open an auctioneers business which operated on the corner of Williamson and Hargraves Streets. Councillor Marks was elected to the seat of Darling in May 1893 and remained serving until 1902. He served as Mayor once only from 1896-97. It was noted in the Bendigo Advertiser on July 3rd 1897 that Mayor Marks appeared in new robes .. made to council order by Messrs Henderson and Goodisson who dealt in highly fashionable goods in the Beehive. (fn https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/page/9088966). It is not know if these robes are still in existence. Harry Marks married Mary Leech in 1881and together they had four sons and one daughter. Harry Marks died in February 1916 aged 60. After his death Mary Marks became the senior partner in the firm HM Marks and Sons auctioneers. This elaborate Letter of Appreciation was hand drawn and painted by artist and photographer Frederick de Kock who was associated with Mr N Caire's photographic Studio, View Place and by 1882 was producing and teaching hand painting on ceramics. Abraham Harkness, Esq., J.P. was an influential Australian pioneer, industrialist, and civic leader who served as the Mayor of the City of Sandhurst (now known as Bendigo, Victoria) for the 1882–1883 council term. He served as a local magistrate hence 'JP' (Justice of the Peace)Large wooden framed illuminated address presented to Mayor Abraham Harkness. The frame has a flowery motive on the edges, with Australian animals (possums, rosellas, duck, bilby? ) in small circles at each corner and half way vertically. The edge including circles is golden in colour. Under a glass cover an ornate illuminated address to Abraham Harkness Esq. J.P. Mayor of Sandhurst 1882-3. Presented March 1883. Wording states: @ To Abraham Harkness Esq. JP, Mayor of Sandhurst 1882-1883. Returning to Australia, he became proprietor of the Abbott Supply Company, a director of the Sandhurst Building Society, the Bendigo Gas Company, and several local mining enterprises. He owned farms at Lyell, Mandurang and Eppalock, and was a pioneer of lucerne cultivation and tanning. In 1887, Abbott became a councillor for Strathfieldsaye Shire, a position he held for fifteen years. He was shire president (1901–02) and a Bendigo City councillor (1904–09; 1913–19), serving as Mayor of Bendigo between 1917 and 1918. Jacob Cohn was a prominent figure in Sandhurst (changed name to Bendigo in 1891). Jacob Cohn was a partner in the well-known Cohn Brothers brewery and served as the city's mayor during the 1888–1889 term. The Cohn Brothers' Victoria Brewery, founded in 1857, was a cornerstone of Bendigo's industry for over a century. Established by Danish immigrant brothers Moritz, Julius, and Jacob Cohn, it is most famous for brewing Australia’s first successful lager in 1882. In 1925, the family sold their brewing and hotel interests to Carlton & United Breweries (CUB). However, they continued to manufacture soft drinks and cordials until the 1970s, when the business was eventually acquired by the Coca-Cola Amatil Group. The illuminated address was usually a highly decorative, hand-lettered document often given to public officials in the 19th century to mark significant service or retirement. Sir John McIntyre (1832-1904) was a key figure in the Bendigo goldfields, a pharmacy owner, a prominent mining investor, and a leader in local government. McIntyre served on the Sandhurst Municipal Council (starting in 1859) and held the position of Mayor of the Borough of Sandhurst for six consecutive years (1863–1868), a period coinciding with the city’s early development and significant gold production. The Freedom of Entry to the City on the 26th of October 1990 was an honour first conferred by the Bendigo City Council to the Army Survey Regiment in 1970. This was the fifth time the unit exercised its freedom of marching into the city with swords drawn, bayonets fixed and drums beating. The honour is usually bestowed upon local regiments, in recognition of their dedicated service, and it is common for military units to periodically exercise their freedom by arranging a parade through the city. The event began with a ceremonial parade at the Queen Elizabeth II Oval. The RAAF Central Command Band provided the music at the parade. After formal inspections of the troops, the Army Survey Regiment saluted as it marched past the Reviewing Officer - Mayor of Bendigo Councillor James Douglass, military dignitaries and guests. Led by the Regiment’s CO – LTCOL Rene van den Tol, the unit marched down View St, along Pall Mall and to Gaol Rd. Regiment members were treated to a civic reception at the City Hall after the ceremony. The Regiment also exercised its Freedom of Entry with anniversary parades in 1977, 1980, 1985, 1992 and 1996.
