Orbost & District Historical SocietyPhotograph - boys with calves, 1913-1915
... The Mundy (father) and McCole (mother) families were early settlers in the Jarrahmond/Orbost area. ...On a piece of cardboard attached to the photograph: Jack and Fred Mundy On Walter & Sarah (McCole) Mundy's property 5 miles lup the 'B' Road, Jarrahmond. 1913-1915...The Mundy (father) and McCole (mother) families were early settlers in the Jarrahmond/Orbost area. ...This is delightful photograph of Jack and Fred Mundy as young children, playing with their calves on their parents property at Jarrahmond. The Mundy (father) and McCole (mother) families were early settlers in the Jarrahmond/Orbost area. These children are engaged in a serious game of childhood -- driving their own small bullock team of young calves. The small bullock yokes across the calves necks have been made by the children's father, Jack Mundy. Note: Item 420, a small yoke, (thought to be one of the yokes in photograph 3354), is on display in the Slab Hut in Orbost. This photograph is significant because it is both historic and rare. It shows an aspect of the more serious play of childhood, in this case, practicing driving a small team of calves on the childrens' farm at Jarrahmond. It is also significant because it relates to another item in the collection, Item 430. A b/w photograph under glass in a brown wooden frame. The photograph shows a house in the right background and two children with 4 calves in the foreground. The larger boy is wearing a hat, holding a whip, and is standing near four calves hitched to a sled with milk or cream cans on the shed. A smaller child is standing near the sled. The photograph has pieces torn from around the edges. On a piece of cardboard attached to the photograph: Jack and Fred Mundy On Walter & Sarah (McCole) Mundy's property 5 miles lup the 'B' Road, Jarrahmond. 1913-1915farming, calves, mundy, childhood, jarrahmond, orbost -

Coverdale; Clem Healey; Gil Richardson; Ray Wait In 1912 the school at Pumpkin Point opened to serve the children of farmers living in the Bete Bolong district. This meant a big change in their way of life because in the past the children had been rowed across the Snowy River each day to attend school at Jarrahmond. Myrtle Bunting was the first HT of the school which had been erected on a block of land purchased from H. Richardson. The school functioned until 1952 when a shortage of pupils caused its closure. As a bus service to Orbost now operated, the school at Pumpkin Point faced permanent closure. J. McKeown bought the building. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is a pictorial record associated with education in the Orbost district,A black and photograph on a light grey card. Morrison and 20 other ratepayers, John Williams, R. ...The names come from a variety of areas, from as far away as Glenmaggie, and may reflect who contributed a set sum for a presentation. Appears to have originally been framed. Fritz Horstman was first chair of the Upper Maffra Co-operative Butter and Cheese Factory in 1904.An important example of a locally-produced Illuminated address, as opposed to those of a more grandiose nature that were purchased from "outside".Illuminated address, unframed, presented Dec 1885 to Fritz Horstman, following his representing residents in the Maffra Shire for seven years.
