The Northern District School of Nursing opened in 1950 to address the issues around nurse recruitment, training and education that had previously been hospital based. The residential school was to provide theoretical and in-house education and practical training over three years. The students would also receive practical hands-on training in the wards of associated hospitals. The Northern District School of Nursing operated from Lister House, Rowan Street, Bendigo. It was the first independent school of nursing in Victoria and continued until it closed in 1989.Two page typewritten carbon copy of a meeting at Lister House, Friday 7th August, 1953, to discuss formation of a Bendigo Branch of the Royal Victorian College of Nursing indicated as Press Copy. The Norman Oliver collection. Norman Oliver was three times Mayor of Bendigo - 1950-51, 1964-65, 1970-71. Eight pages of typed notes for a speech titled 'Address to Public Meeting Eaglehawk Town Hall May 18 1955'. This was a campaign speech in the Victorian State Election 1955. Oliver was standing as a candidate for the Country Party. Topics he covered : his personal abilities, housing and new home construction, sewerage, and industries.
