This book of war cartoons that had been published in the Argus Newspaper is a second volume to "Havoc" (item 00987). World War 2 has almost enveloped the globe and the Allies are having difficulty in containing the rapid expansion of Axis forces. It has been kept by a Legatee as a souvenir and found its way into the archives.Despite the reverses of the allied forces the cartoonist has maintained a positive outlook in his sketches about the outcome of the war. The photo shows President W.A. Perrin accepting a donation from the Mr W.P. Mein of Williamstown Racing Club at a Legatee function. The Comradeship Bell is on the table so it is assumed it is a Legacy luncheon, usually held weekly. President 'Bill' Perrin is wearing dark glasses, as he was blind as a result of service in the First World War. He went on to be elected President of the Co-Ordinating Council at the Perth Conference in 1948 to succeed L/- Savige in the role. An article in Trove provides the date of 19 June 1943 for the luncheon. The Williamstown Racing Club donated the net proceeds of a race meeting on 12 May at Moonee Valley to Legacy, which was £9,178/8/6. The photo caption identifies the men as: 'CHEQUE FOR £9,178 being presented by Mr W. P. Mein, chairman of Williamstown Racing Club, to Mr W. A. Perrin, president of the Legacy Club at the club's luncheon yesterday. The funds were raised by a race meeting. Seated (from left) : Major H. Steele, Messrs E. Sherwen (vicepresident Legacy), A. N. Mein's history of Ballarat College, published 1964, records the school's first enrolments this way. "The Ballarat College will be opened on Wednesday morning, 6th July, 1864, at 9 o'clock, in the Rev. Wm. Henderson's Church. Intending students will assemble at that hour" Advertisement in the Ballarat Star. 'Two seven year old boys 'assembled'. They were cousins, and their names were: Samuel Baird and James Brown. The medal was awarded to Trooper John Garbutt of the Prince of Wales Victorian Volunteer Light Horse (Ballarat) in 1880 for attaining fourth prize n the sword competition. In 1862, the units of the Mounted Volunteer Corps in Victoria were formed into a single regiment known as the Victorian Volunteer Light Horse. This title changed again in 1863, to the Prince of Wales Victorian Volunteer Light Horse ( Hussars ). In 1870 a uniform was adopted that was based on the British 19th Hussars. Troops were based at various times at Geelong, Ballarat, Kyneton, Bendigo, Castlemaine and Dandenong, as well as metropolitan Melbourne. In 1885, most of the Cavalry were incorporated into a newly formed Victorian Mounted Rifles. Mein's 1964 History of Ballarat College states: 'To summarise, it may be fairly claimed that the College's War Record in 1914-1918 would have reflected great credit on a school with ten times its numbers...Some of the credit of the college war record must be attributed to the influence of Major John Garbutt, M.A. who was Principal of the College for 33 years...Nearly all the old Collegians who distinguished themselves in the war had been trained by him. Book prize awarded to J J Chalmers for excellence in English, Geography and History. Awarded during R O McCoy's principalship 1864 - 1874. J Chalmers was Dux of College in 1870 but this prize was awarded in 1871 suggesting that he completed an extra year while awaiting university entrance. Social significance being one example of the prizes provided by R O McCoy as his own gift. From 1969 these prizes were obtained through special order in London and were uniformly bound in full calf with the College seal and motto embossed on the cover.
