Melbourne Legacy is one of Australia’s oldest and most significant veteran‑family support organisations, founded in 1923 by returned World War I servicemen led by Captain Stanley Savige. Its purpose has always been to uphold The Promise “to look after the missus and the kids” by supporting the widows, children, and dependents of veterans who died or were injured as a result of their service. The Melbourne Legacy Footscray -Sunshine Branch beginning occurred in late 1957, at which time Legatees John Lobb and Phil Dietrich, a past President of Melbourne Legacy called upon Mr Jack Vance, finance Director of H.V McKay Massey Harris Ltd to discuss with him the establishment of a branch of Legacy within the Footscray - Sunshine and neighbouring municipalities. It was then that Jack Vance rang Ron Crosie and asked him if he could join them in their current discussions, which he did. This was an invitation to celebrate 25 years of the founding of the Footscray-Sunshine branch of Melbourne Legacy. This branch was formed due to the increase in the number of widows and children in need of assistance from Legacy. The first branch formed in the area was the Williamstown/Werribee branch in 1956. Between 1959 and 1999 it is estimated Legatee Crosbie visited each widow 4-5 times per year between 1959-1999. The table and chairs once belonged to the Officers' Mess, 24th Battalion. From 1928 - 1936 the CO of the 24th Battalion was Lt Col S.G. Savige, DSO MC. It was during this time that the chairs were made and used for dining-in nights. During the a ceremony of remembrance, each officer stood behind a chair and called the name on its back as a mark of respect for those KIA during WW1. At the inaugural meeting of the Club, from which arose Melbourne Legacy, in September 1923, eight of the fourteen members had worn the colour patch of 24th Battalion.The connection to Savige and the fact that many of his officers from 24th Battalion became members of Melbourne Legacy. This table and its chairs were formally gifted to Melbourne Legacy on 9th May 1956 when the Legacy Club of Melbourne moved to Legacy House. They have been used since in the Board Room, now located on level 1, Legacy House, 293 Swanston Street, Melbourne. Two Legatees were responsible for fully refurbishing the table and chairs - Legatee Gordon Beith (Morrabbin Branch) and Legatee Ted McKenzie (Footscray/Sunshine Branch) Board Room Table - Clear varnished timber table with a two piece glass top Table legs are turned timber on wheels x 5.
