Melbourne Legacy is one of Australia’s oldest and most significant veteran‑family support organisations, founded in 1923 by returned World War I servicemen led by Captain Stanley Savige. Its purpose has always been to uphold The Promise “to look after the missus and the kids” by supporting the widows, children, and dependents of veterans who died or were injured as a result of their service.

The Melbourne Legacy Footscray -Sunshine Branch beginning occurred in late 1957, at which time Legatees John Lobb and Phil Dietrich, a past President of Melbourne Legacy called upon Mr Jack Vance, finance Director of H.V McKay Massey Harris Ltd to discuss with him the establishment of a branch of Legacy within the Footscray - Sunshine and neighbouring municipalities.

It was then that Jack Vance rang Ron Crosie and asked him if he could join them in their current discussions, which he did. A number of other meetings were held with various people and subsequently the Melbourne Legacy Footscray -Sunshine Branch was formed.
