The Sunshine Gardens became officially known as the H.V. McKay Memorial Gardens in 1953, when the Sunshine Council formally adopted the name to commemorate H.V. McKay, who had died in 1926. That’s the moment the gardens shifted from simply being “the Sunshine Gardens” or “the factory gardens” to a named memorial landscape. In 1991, a conservation strategy plan was prepared to protect the garden's historical significance. The garden was first planted in 1909.Photograph of sign and trees H.V. McKay Memorial Gardens Anderson Road Sunshineh.v. mckay gardens, h.v. mckay memorial gardens, anderson road, sunshine

The H.V. McKay Memorial Gardens were established in 1909 and are Australia's oldest remaining industrial gardens. The heritage-listed gardens on Anderson Road were established by H.V. McKay as Sunshine Gardens later taken over by Brimbank City Council and renamed the H.V. McKay Memorial Gardens. The development of the gardens was not only an expression of H.V. McKay's own social philosophy but also represented a changing attitude to Urban Planning that is known as the "Garden Suburb" movement. Designed by the assistant city engineer at Ballarat, F. A. Horsfall and laid out by head gardener S. G. Thompson, the eight-acre gardens were sited alongside the factory and incorporated recreation facilities and popular horticultural displays.H.V. These photographs, taken by The Advocate in 1991, record the dedication of the Memorial Gardens at the Sunshine RSL Dickson Street, Sunshine by RAAF Chaplain Wing Commander Peter Davidson from Base Williams, Laverton. The garden features a propeller, a gun, and an anchor, each symbolising one of the three branches of the Australian Armed Services. The propeller is from a RAAF Dakota, the gun is an Ack‑Ack from the Second World War, and the anchor was supplied by the Royal Australian Navy. These gardens are important because they form a physical, symbolic, and ceremonial space honouring all three branches of Australia’s armed services, created and dedicated by the local veteran community, and used as a focal point for remembrance in Sunshine.Anchor, propellor and gun launch in the gardens 99 Dickson Street Sunshine RSL 559.1 6854.01 - Sunshine RSL Dickson Street Sunshine Anchor, Propellor And Gun Launch 1991 Photographs.JPG L - R Bob Brown (Wing Commander No 1 Stores Tottenham), Richard Wright (Sunshine RSL President), Mrs Lucy Heap (Member of the State Executive of the RSL), Peter Davidson (RAAF Chaplain Wing Commander, Base Williams, Laverton) 6854.02 - Sunshine RSL Dickson Street Sunshine Anchor, Propellor And Gun Launch 1991 Photographs.JPG L - R Mrs Lucy Heap (Member of the State Executive of the RSL), Richard Wright (Sunshine RSL President)sunshine rsl, dickson street, sunshine
