Thomas Stoddart (1828 - 1905) bought 12 white marble statues during a visit to Italy. Stoddart arranged for them to be shipped to Victoria and placed on pedestals of Sicilian marble and on bases of Victorian granite. These statues were unveiled in the gardens on Queen Victoria's birthday, 24th May, 1884. His intention was for the statues to adorn and add interest to the gardens. J. Mann and Sons was first established as a farm produce store in 1921. The range of products was extended in the 1930s and included groceries and hardware, as well as the first petrol bowser in Wodonga outside the store. Taking observations of a patient is a very important part of nursing assessment, and a thermometer would be used to assess a patient's temperature as required, at least daily for most patients. Nurses used this item commonly every day. The thermometer was attached to the patient's bed. The thermometers were supposed to be cleaned before use - kept in chlorhexidine solution in the holding tube, wiped over with alcohol swab prior to use in later years. The process of cleaning changed over the years in line with infection control practices.
