Many of the items are European-made, generally of British origin, however there are a number that were made for the Australian market by Australian manufacturers. There were clearly a huge range of toys produced for the Australian and International children’s market in the Nineteenth and Twentieth centuries. The examples of toys in the collection include examples of alphabet toys, arcade toys, baby toys, construction toys, dolls, doll accessories, educational toys, soft toys, tin toys, toy animals, toy blocks, toy machines, toy typewriters, etc. IMP is a fifteen puzzle. The metal base and the numbers are housed in a red leather purse with press-stud. The wallet contains a booklet of promotional material and 'problems'. Puzzle consisting of 15 squares, numbered 1 through 15, which can be slid horizontally or vertically within a four-by-four grid that has one empty space among its 16 locations. This item, always known as a ‘Chinese Puzzle,’ has been in the collection of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society for many years. It is such an oddity that it is probable that it came from the collection of the old Warrnambool Museum which was established in the 1870s-80s and was dismantled in the 1960s. It had many objects of a bizarre nature such as this as many local people while on their travels brought back from many different countries objects deemed to be of unusual interest. This item is of great interest as an oddity from the 19th century and it attracts great attention when it is displayed. This is a spherical-shaped imperial quart thick glass bottle with a cork in the top. It contains a clear liquid filling two-thirds of the bottle. Inside the bottle and filling it to the top of its main section are several pieces of metal of varying shapes. These originally were part of a puzzle, presumably with the object being to unlock the shapes from each other. These have now been connected to each other with what looks like thin wire. Dutch families tended to play boardgames during the long winter nights.It was brought to Australia to continue old customsRectangular white box with black lid on which information is printed in orange. Inside box is a plastic moulded container holding the various puzzle pieces. Puzzle pieces are made from variety of materials including metal, wood and possibly plastic Some items are missing judging by the diagrams.Seven language on top of box all saying "play it anywhere". Images of the various puzzles. The manufacturer logo and name (Jumbo) all featured prominently on side of lid. "Made in Holland by Jumbo, Hausemann & Hoette nv Amsterdam" Has recommended play age of 8 and higher. On sides of lid feature multi-coloured title of the game. Price tag on side of lid shows value of 9.75 The box features on all sides puzzle piece diagrams and also the statement "that the solution can be found in the box" in Dutch, English, German & French.
