This occasion was one of several events held to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the formation of the Royal Australian Survey Corps. Although historical tours of Fortuna occurred on a regular basis, this was the first technical open day since 1972. The Royal Australian Survey Corps recognised that an Open Day was the best way for the local community in Bendigo to gain an insight into the unit’s important role as Defence’s map production agency, its technical equipment, and its economic importance to Bendigo. It also gave them an opportunity to tour through historic Fortuna Villa. This occasion is covered in more detail in page 143 of Valerie Lovejoy’s book 'Mapmakers of Fortuna – A history of the Army Survey Regiment’ ISBN: 0-646-42120-4. Refer to items 6434.27P and 6436.18P for more photos of the Open Day taken inside Fortuna, the garden areas and production areas of Lithographic Squadron. Photo prints of some of these photos were scanned and catalogued in items 6247.30P and 6291.6P.These 35 photographs were taken at an Army Survey Regiment Open Day held at Fortuna, Bendigo on the 24th of February 1990. Timor was the target for the night of 6 July, when Flight Lieutenant "Bunny" Austin (A16-207) led five Hudsons to bomb Koepang town. The next night he led back seven aircraft against the airfield at Penfoei, attacking before dawn on the 8th prior to United States Liberators bombing the runways and barracks. 75 Austin's aircraft was caught by Penfoei's master defensive searchlight, and Austin used violent evasion and switching on and off of his IFF equipment, a tactic used in Europe. The two photos taken in 1961 are annotated with named personnel and the date. The other photos are not annotated with dates, locations and names of personnel, although the technicians in the last three photos taken in 1979 are positively identified. The photos were most likely taken in the Ballroom, Ante Room and Attic, Cartographic Squadron’s main production rooms on the top floor of Fortuna Villa. Scribing was the cartographic process of drafting topographic features such as drainage, relief, vegetation, roads and culture on specially coated map reproduction material. The cartographic technician scribed out the map feature such as a creek to a specified line width on the map sheet, using a tool affixed with a metal or sapphire tipped cutter. This is a set of 10 photographs of technicians scribing topographic features at the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo. Photos of the other three Squadrons, the Officers, and Warrant Officers/Sergeants from this set of negatives are catalogued in item 6440.11P. On this occasion outgoing RSM WO1 Phil Meagher handed over to incoming RSM WO1 Ken Johnston OAM MM. WO1 Phillip Nicholas Meagher served in the Australian Regular Army (ARA) from Jan 1971 to Jun 1997. He was RSM of the Army Survey Regiment from 1992 to 1995. He was succeeded by WO1 Ken Johnston OAM MM from the Royal Australian Infantry Corps, who was RSM for the remainder of 1995. WO1 Johnston served in the Citizens’ Military Force and the ARA from Feb 1966 to Mar 2002. A tribute in the Army Newspaper on the 14 May 2014 and discoverable on the Trove website, stated he passed away on 12 May 2014. In this tribute it stated he was a Vietnam War Military Medal recipient, known as a “Digger’s Digger” and for his direct no-nonsense approach. As RSM of the Army Survey Regiment, WO1 Johnston was instrumental in shaping and sharpening the military skills and behaviours of personnel who chose to continue in their reallocation to other corps in the ARA or the 1st Topographic Support Squadron in Enoggera, QLD. His tenure is covered in more detail on page 164 of Valerie Lovejoy’s book 'Mapmakers of Fortuna – A history of the Army Survey Regiment’ ISBN: 0-646-42120-4. On this occasion CO LTCOL Duncan Burns presented MAJ Mick Banham the Defence Force Service Medal for 15 years of efficient remunerated service in the Australian Army. This was the fifth time the unit exercised its freedom of marching into the city with swords drawn, bayonets fixed and drums beating. The honour is usually bestowed upon local regiments, in recognition of their dedicated service, and it is common for military units to periodically exercise their freedom by arranging a parade through the city. The event began with a ceremonial parade at the Queen Elizabeth II Oval. The RAAF Central Command Band provided the music at the parade. After formal inspections of the troops, the Army Survey Regiment saluted as it marched past the Reviewing Officer - Mayor of Bendigo Councillor James Douglass, military dignitaries and guests. Led by the Regiment’s CO – LTCOL Rene van den Tol, the unit marched down View St, along Pall Mall and to Gaol Rd. Regiment members were treated to a civic reception at the City Hall after the ceremony. The Regiment also exercised its Freedom of Entry with anniversary parades in 1977, 1980, 1985, 1992 and 1996. See items 9125.54P and 9126.24P for additional sets of photos taken at the event. The formal booklet covering the event is catalogued under item 9123.This set of 28 photographs of the Army Survey Regiment were taken at the beginning of the Freedom of Entry parade, held at the City of Bendigo’s Queen Elizabeth Oval (QEO) on the 26th of October 1990.
