Domestic object Mickey Mouse Puzzle F.J. ...This puzzle was used by the Parker family. You probably had a set similar to these; I know I did as a kid. While these haven't completely vanished from the toy landscape, there are still a few sets of "Puzzle Blocks" being made today. Basically, these were six puzzles in one, made up of wooden cubes, each with 1/20 of the image glued to them. Usually they came in a tray or carrying case, allowing the owner to have a place to assemble the pictures. The collection comprises manuscripts, personal artefacts used by the Haeusler family on their farm in Wodonga, and a set of glass negatives which offer a unique visual snapshot of the domestic and social lives of the Haeusler family and local Wodonga community. The Haeusler family migrated from Prussia (Germany) to South Australia in the 1840s and 1850s, before purchasing 100 acres of Crown Land made available under the Victorian Lands Act 1862 (also known as ‘Duffy’s Land Act’) in 1866 in what is now Wodonga West. The Haeusler family were one of several German families to migrate from South Australia to Wodonga in the 1860s. These Disney figurine toys belonged to Alfred Haeusler (b.1922) and were played with during his childhood in Wodonga in the 1930s. The character of Donald Duck was released by Disney Studios in 1934, so they can be dated from the mid to late 1930s. These toys are among several objects in the Haeusler Collection concerning early childhood that provides insight into family and home life in early twentieth century Wodonga. The Walt Disney Company animation film studio was established in 1923 in Los Angeles. The period the Haeusler Collection Disney figurines were manufactured in the 1930s is known as the ‘Golden Age’ of Disney filmmaking, beginning with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and ending with Bambi. This item has well documented provenance and a known owner. It forms part of a significant and representative historical collection which reflects the local history of Wodonga. It contributes to our understanding of domestic and family life in early twentieth century Wodonga, as well as providing interpretative capacity for themes including local history, social history, and women’s history. For the names of the people in the photo refer to "Bridging the Gap" by Ida Stanton, p.88. ...This is a photo of the "Queen Competition", probably the best remembered entertainment of the 1930's. Four local lasses were chosen to represent the following: Bellfield Hotel, Grampians House, The Cricket Club and the Grampians Mountains. When the long awaited evening came each Queen and her attendants paraded through the hall, the results were announced and the winner (who this year was Valerie Evans) took her place on a throne erected in the middle of the stage. The other Queens made their way to thrones on either side of her. The audience were treated to a right royal display as the "Bishop" placed a crown on the winner's head. Much merriment followed including a play, with students dressed as Minnie and Mickey Mouse and other Disney characters. For the names of the people in the photo refer to "Bridging the Gap" by Ida Stanton, p.88. The photo shows a group of people arranged on and below a dais. There is a woman dressed as royalty sitting on a throne in the centre, flanked by a man dressed as a bishop on the left and a man dressed as a courtier on the right. There are two young girls in long white dresses wearing flowered bands in their hair standing in front of the men. There are more girls in white dresses and flower bands along both sided of the dais and two youths wearing ruffle fronted shirts and holding batons/walking sticks(?) at the front of each row of girls. Carpeted steps lead down from the dais and in front of the dais on either side are two boys dressed as pages. Flower arrangements flank the foot of the stairs.recreation, entertainment -

In this photo, it is being demolished by Whelan the Wrecker. ...Published: The Age 4 April 1934 p11 Published title: "DEMOLITION AND BUILDING ACTIVITIES IN THE CITY." Published caption: "Interesting studies in the building activities in the city are afforded by the above three photographs taken yesterday when work ceased owing to the rain. That on the left is a striking picture of the remains of the Palace Hotel buildings, running back from Bourke street to Little Collins street, better known as the Bijou Theatre. This is the largest demolition contract ever undertaken in Melbourne. The view is towards Bourke street, from a vantage point in Little Collins street. In the right centre of the ruins may be seen a large portion of the light frame and lattice work which extended over the once well known arcade. In the background three stories of Melbourne Coffee Palace, on the opposite side of Bourke street rise above the front of the theatre in the photograph, and the Melbourne General Hospital is just discernible through the mist at the top. The steel frame work in the centre picture is readily identifiable as that erected for the extension of the State Savings Bank at the south-west corner of Bourke and Elizabeth streets. The steel skeleton to the right, suggestive of immense strength, is that nearing completion in Collins street for the Bank of New South Wales." Trove article identifier: http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article203828669 Description: Partial demolition of three-storied and five-storied buildings. One building has a large atrium. View of buildings taken from rear. Building at 225 Bourke Street (between Swanston and Russell, south side) contains Bijou Theatre. Also Victoria Arcade, built 1876, architect Joseph Reed. On other side of Arcade is Gaiety Theatre (formerly known as Oxford Theatre). Cityscape in background. Opposite is Melbourne Coffee Palace, built 1882, demolished c.1970. Featured in "Newsworthy: Melbourne in photographs 1933-1936" exhibition at East Melbourne Library, October to December 2023. Exhibition caption by project volunteer Louise McKenzie: "The largest demolition contract ever undertaken in Melbourne… The building on the left is a striking picture of the remains of the Palace Hotel buildings, running back from Bourke Street to Little Collins Street, better known as the Bijou Theatre. This is the largest demolition contract ever undertaken in Melbourne.” – The Age The Bijou Theatre was erected in 1877 and originally built as part of Victoria Arcade, which was entered through the Bourke Street frontage. The Theatre was “de rigueur with the gallants and belles of the period. Dainty ladies and white gloved, stiff collared dandies thronged the ‘promenade’ which runs under the theatre.” (Herald 5 Feb 1934) However by 1885, after a fire, the building had been rebuilt to include the three level Bijou Theatre. In November 1890, Arthur Streeton worked there briefly as a scenery painter. By 1909 it was the first “legitimate” theatre in Melbourne to screen films on a semi-permanent basis, while also covering vaudeville, pantomime and its wildly popular final program, “Mickey the Mouse” Revue. In this photo, it is being demolished by Whelan the Wrecker. The tiny iron spiral staircases that led to the dressing rooms (and down which more than one unwary actor sometimes fell) were salvaged and built into the fabric of Monsalvat at Eltham.
