Sir Rohan Delacombe opens the new wing of Mirridong Nursing home, named in honour of long-time and tireless worker, Katharine Rose. Pictures show Sir Rohan meeting residents, addressing the crowd, unveiling the plaque, walking through the wing and signing the visitors book, accompanied by his wife, Mrs Delacombe, Katharine Rose and a man in military dress. Images of people celebrating Vision Victoria week during May 1-7, 1989 at various events, or taking part in publicity shots to promote the week. Photographs taken of various activities that occurred at the Association for the Blind's nursing home in Bendigo - Mirridong. The Laura Clarke Auxiliary formed at the Mirridong Home in 1968 and was wound up on November 22, 2001. On August 10, 1927 the first Bendigo Home for the Blind was opened in Long Gully. Housing 18 people, it was acquired by the Association for the Advancement of the Blind, and located in Bennett Street. In 1934 the committee looked at extensions to cope with demand, however the cost proved to be too great and instead a property in Inglewood Road was obtained in 1935. Limited by the need for extensions to their Long Gully property, the Association for the Advancement of the Blind acquired a property in Inglewood Road that was sewered and suitable for extensions. Opened by Colonel Lansell on February 29, 1936, it served until the 1940's as despite it's potential, the dirt and dust from the nearby mullock heaps coated the building (and often its interior) when winds blew from a certain direction. Mullock heaps are created when an area has been mined, and the dirt is heaped into a pile near the opening. Being located nearby, they created an additional workload for staff, as well as annoyance for residents.
