This technical textbook is the nineteenth edition of the book by Henry Raper, Lieutenant in the Royal Navy with awards that include F.R.A.S. (Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society) and F.R.G.S. (Friend of the Royal Geographical Society). The book is dedicated in honour of Rear-Admiral Sir Francis Beaufort K.C.B., Hydrographer to the Admiralty. He was awarded the title K.C.B. (King's Commander) as a Member of the Order of Bath, an order of British Chivalry, The book was first published in 1840 and soon became a resource for navigation students. It includes topics on nautical navigation, astronomy, navigation charts, calculations and mathematical tables, time, tides, ships, longitude, and position at sea. Thomas A. Hull, who revised and expanded this edition, was a Commander in the Royal Navy and had previously been Superintendent of Admiralty Charts used for navigation worldwide by seamen from many walks of life. The publisher, J D Potter of London, was at that time the sole agent for the Admiralty Charts produced by the Royal Navy. Printer Spottswoode and Co.,. was established by William Strachan in 1738. In 1819 his nephews A and R Spottswoode took over the business and bought premises in New-Street Square and Shoe Lane. In 1850 over 200 workers were employed by the firm. and five years later the business became Spottswoode & Co. Andrew Spottswoode invented the Spottswoode Press. This technical book was very popular as a textbook for students of maritime navigation, written and updated by members of the British Royal Navy and relied upon for accurate advice and information. The first edition was published in 1840, this edition was updated, expanded and published in 1891 when ports around the world were filling with travellers, merchants and business people. He was born in England in 1834 and arrived in Melbourne in 1850. He soon joined his father's wholesale soft goods firm, spending some time as its manager on the goldfields. Sargood entered the Legislative Council in 1874. He was Victoria's first Minister for Defence in 1883. Sir Frederick Sargood was created CMG. In 1885 and KCMG in 1890 as a reward for his contribution to public life. He died suddenly in 1903. Rippon Lea was designed by the leading firm of architects, Reed and Barnes. Joseph Reed had travelled in Europe in 1863, including northern Italy. When he returned he introduced the use of polychromy. While not the first examples, Rippon Lea and the Independent Church in Collins Street were the best and set a fashion which became a distinctly Melbourne style, particularly used for houses and churches. Its popularity was possible because of the new availability of different coloured bricks. Reed's fine Lombardic Romanesque details soon became debased by others. As Sargood's family grew and his fortunes prospered, Rippon Lea was extended to include 33 rooms - a complete mansion. The cast iron porte cochere and the northern conservatory were added in 1897. The architects were Taylor and Fitts. The ballroom was added in 1882 and remodelled in 1889. Many alterations have changed the interior and exterior during the ownerships of Benjamin Nathan and later his daughter Mrs Louisa Jones in the 1930s and are in their own right of significance. Sir Thomas Bent owned the property from 1903 until 1911 but never lived there. He subdivided much of the land. The original garden dates from about 1868, and it seems that William Guilfoyle of the Botanic Gardens was involved. It was redesigned in a more natural style in the 1880s by Sargood and his head gardener, Adam Anderson. The lake, waterfalls, fernery, hill and grotto are balanced by mighty deciduous trees and conifers. These are interspersed with, but never dominated by Australian species such as eucalyptus and other exotics. The sinuous drive with its carefully prepared approach to the house is notable. The original vegetable gardens, orchard and outer paddocks no longer survive. The shade house is important as the largest known in Australia and possibly the world. Its curved plan and form of construction are particularly notable. It was built about 1884.Page 90 of Photograph Album with five photographs (one landscape and 4 portrait) of Ripponlea - two different views of the front entrance to the mansion, one of the front gates and two different views of the main residence.Handwritten: "Ripponlea" 192 Hotham Street [top right] / North [under top left photo] / Neg 255 Dec 1972 MAIN DRIVE [under bottom left photo] / Neg 238 8 OCT 1966 [under middle right photo] / 88 [bottom right]trevor hart, elsternwick, mansion, hotham street, frederick sargood, reed and barnes, cast iron porte cochere, conservatory, 1860's, 1890's, ballroom, 1880's, benjamin nathan, louisa jones, thomas bent, sir thomas bent, william guilfoyle, adam anderson, lake, grotto, shade house, portico, ripponlea, victorian, sir frederick sargood, architects, polychrome bricks, lombardic romanesque architectural style, rippon lea, taylor and fitts, land subdivisions, gardens, drives, vegetable gardens, orchards

In 1977, artist Annette Meikle undertook a commission to illustrate a book recording stories of places and people in the Bayside area. It was published in 1978 as Sandringham Sketchbook, with text by Elizabeth Waters. The sketches were intended to record remaining examples of Bayside’s early architecture and environment, as well as reflect newer architectural changes. Meikle went on to donate 22 of these sketches to Bayside City Council in 2003. This gun stood in the grounds of the Beaumaris RSL, located on the highest hill in Beaumaris – more than 300 metres above sea level. The ‘25-pounder’ was one of the best field guns of its day and was used by British and Commonwealth armies during the Second World War. The original ten-acre property, which was the former holiday home of wealthy Toorak resident Langford-Jack, was sold to the Legacy Club in 1942 and operated as a holiday home for Legacy children. Renamed Blamey House in honour of Field-Marshall Sir Thomas Blamey, it was purchased by the RSL in 1955. The Beaumaris RSL Club closed its doors on Balcombe Road in 2016 after the property was sold in 2013.Annette Meikle, Beaumaris RSL 1977, ink and watercolour, 33.8 x 23.5 cm. The Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works (MMBW) plans were produced from the 1890s to the 1950s. They were crucial to the design and development of Melbourne's sewerage and drainage system. The plans, at a scale of 40 feet to 1 inch (1:480), provide a detailed historical record of Melbourne streetscapes and environmental features. Each plan covers one or two street blocks (roughly six streets), showing details of buildings, including garden layouts and ownership boundaries, and features such as laneways, drains, bridges, parks, municipal boundaries and other prominent landmarks as they existed at the time each plan was produced. (Source: State Library of Victoria)This plan forms part of a large group of MMBW plans and maps that was donated to the Society by the Mr Poulter, City Engineer of the City of Kew in 1989. Within this collection, thirty-five hand-coloured plans, backed with linen, are of statewide significance as they include annotations that provide details of construction materials used in buildings in the first decade of the 20th century as well as additional information about land ownership and usage. The copies in the Public Record Office Victoria and the State Library of Victoria are monochrome versions which do not denote building materials so that the maps in this collection are invaluable and unique tools for researchers and heritage consultants. A number of the plans are not held in the collection of the State Library of Victoria so they have the additional attribute of rarity.Original survey plan, issued by the MMBW to a contractor with responsibility for constructing sewers in the area identified on the plan within the Borough of Kew. The plan was at some stage hand-coloured, possibly by the contractor, but more likely by officers working in the Engineering Department of the Borough and later Town, then City of Kew. The hand-coloured sections of buildings on the plan were used to denote masonry or brick constructions (pink), weatherboard constructions (yellow), and public buildings (grey). Plan No.1570 shows the layout of gardens and houses in Sackville Street, Davis Street, Wrixon Street, and Fitzwilliam Street in 1904. While Thomas Street is included on the map, at this stage no houses had been built. The plan identifies two named houses: ‘Fairview’ and ‘Kylemore’. Fairview is more fully delineated in Plan No.1563. Kylemore is one of the few houses in Kew designed by John Beswicke. The most notable owner of Kylemore was William Whitehead, who owned the house between 1895 and 1900. In 1894, Australian newspapers reported the marriage of Whitehead’s daughter to Dr. Gerald Eugene Cussen, the brother of Sir Leo Cussen, the Supreme Court Judge. The married couple was to live at ‘Wilton’ (now the Kew RSL) from 1911-15.melbourne and metropolitan board of works, detail plans, mmbw 1570, cartography

Front page - Governor, Sir Dallas Brooks, opens the War Nurses' Memorial Centre on St Kilda Road. The centre is a memorial to the 75 Australian nurses who lost their lives in the war. The centre will offer various rooms for use and house the the headquarters of the Australian College of Nursing. General Sir Thomas Blamey, chairman of the Centre Committee said there was hardly a fighting soldier who had not at some time experienced the care and devotion to duty of the service sisters. Back page - Left hand clipping - About 500 people, including more than 100 service and civilian nurses attended the ceremony that opened the War Nurses Memorial Centre.
