Horton's Reward Claim. This group of miners also worked another area called 'The Heather Bell" approx. 200 yards further up the gully. About half a pennyweight to the dish is obtained from the wash near the creek. They are panning off 3 dwts per day off one man's ground. This claim is about the best fitted up on the field. It is worked with a sluice box with iron ripples and feeder to match. This was the first police station built in Watgania, and it was probably built during the goldrush era of late19C to early 20C.The photo is of local significance to Watgania and the Ararat district because of its rarity and because of its subject. There is now (in the year 2023) little or nothing left of the township of Watgania, north of Willaura, though there are still several inhabited properties in this area, which shelters close under the eastern face of the Grampians mountains. The Silver Standing Cup was made by Ernest Leviny c1860 and presented to Mr Charles Abraham Saint, editor of the Mount Alexander Mail newspaper, by the town's citizens on his departure from Castlemaine on 31 December 1863. Mount Alexander Mail report; 23 January 1864. This substantial silver centrepiece was the second masterpiece created by Ernest Leviny around 1859. It is decorated with highly detailed cast figures, fine embossing and chasing. 1916 William Henry Thomas of Keys Road , South Brighton (now Moorabbin ) in WW 1 1914 -1918 1st AIF uniform. William was born in 1894 , Christened at the Wesleyan Church. (Methodist), Wickham Road, South Brighton and attended Moorabbin State School. . Private Thomas was a market gardener in Moorabbin prior to his enlistment in the Australian Imperial Force on 19 July 1915. Both his parents wrote separate letters giving their consent for their son to serve overseas due to " the pressing request of my son William Henry, also the urgent need of recruits do give my consent that he shall go to the front." September 29th 1915 he left Australia with the 5th Reinforcements of the 24th Battalion for Egypt. March 1916 he was hospitalised with Mumps and shortly after left Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force for France where he transferred to the 6th Australian Machine Gun Company.. Whilst on leave in England he received medical attention before returning to France and 13 November 1918 he spent a week in the care of the 7rh Field Ambulance suffering with influenza . Private Thomas returned to Australia on the hospital transport Castalia 13 April 1919 and his enlistment was terminated 26 September 1919Private William Henry Thomas and his family are examples of the patriotism exhibited by the market gardeners, and indeed throughout Australia, during the World War 1 1914-1918. This item was used well before European settlement and clearly demonstrates the development of the local Aboriginal tribes, Dhudhuroa and Yaitmathang in the use of a cutting /chopping implement, made from Mount William sourced material i.e. greenstone. This item was probably traded at the Bogong Mountain tribal yearly summer ceremoniesThe significance of this item places it at the fore front of human development in this region. The period when this tool was manufactured represents the time when the natural landscape had not been altered and the natural vegetation, fauna and flora, had not been subjected to imported species.This also proves that local tribes did live in this area and or the Bogong High Plains.Small ground edge stone axe head. The well known sculpture of English playwright William Shakespeare takes an elaborate bow before the Civic Hall, a performance and community center for Ballarat. The unique abstract and elongated mannerist style used in this cast bronze sculpture hints at the art deco style of the Hall behind. The sculptor, Andor Mészáros, was from Budapest but created much of his work in Melbourne. He also created works for Canterbury Cathedral in the UK and several carved stone sculptures for Sydney Hospital. The artwork was commissioned in 1959 through a widely publicised competition and installed in 1960. In addition to making sculptures, Mészáros was also renown as a creator of medallions. In 1951 he received 'the highest award' at the International Medallion Exhibition, Madrid and in 1964 he won the 'purchase prize' at the International Medallion Competition, Arezzo, Italy. From 1970 Mészáros worked with his younger son Michael, also a sculptor. In 2002, the City of Ballarat granted permission for Michael Mészáros to make a cast of the Ballarat Shakespeare artwork to create replica installed in Budapest. The Budapest installation commemorates Shakespeare's connection to the City and the achievements of Andor Mészáros. The artwork was unveiled by Mayor Arthur W. Nicholson. The statue was presented by L.F. North, general Manager of the Fidelity Trustee Company Limited, representing the late H.P. William Murrell was a son of Ambrose and Mary Murrell, who ran the Victoria Hotel in Linton from about 1881. William lived in Daylesford for some years, but returned to live in Linton, where he ran the newsagency. His daughter Carrie Murrell assisted him and eventually took over the management of the newsagency. William Murrell married Lily Clarke (also known as Lily Young), the daughter of Jimmy Clarke (J.Y.
