This paper was read on 14 June 1965 by Dr Frank Forster at a meeting of the section of Medical History, Victorian branch, Australian Medical Association, according to Ann Tovell, who worked at the AMA and in association with Frank. It was likely that Frank Forster acquired the midwifery box belonging to Mrs Mary Howlett at the former Eastern market that was located on the corner of Bourke and Russell Streets up to the early 1960s.Mary Howlett (1840-1922) began practising as a country midwife in 1866 in the western district of Victoria. She qualified as a 'ladies monthly nurse' in 1887 and continued to practise as a nurse and midwife until 1920.She began her six months training at the Melbourne Lying-In Hospital. She was known by many as 'Auntie', and her career spanned more than 50 years. Mrs Howlett's midwifery box and contents were given to Dr Frank Forster, and he donated them to the museum collection in 1993.A5 size paper transcript of lecture. Sister Elizabeth Lindsey worked at the RVIB Nursery from it's inception in 1933. During this time, she took photographs of the children, whom she had care of, documenting their life at RVIB as well as the wartime displacement to Olinda when the army took over the St Kilda Road building. For around the last 70 years, a familiar sight on the Western Highway at Stawell West has been the Roadhouse/Service Station known as ‘Winston Lodge.’ The building was constructed on Crown Land over the years 1950-1952 by local builders, Mr. Bobby Briggs and Mr. Clem Faulkner for Mrs. Winifred Jenkins. Briggs and Faulkner also handled the construction of the new E.S. and A. Bank building in Main Street. Mrs. Jenkins realised that a stopover was needed in Stawell for both truckies and travellers alike. The family believe that the daughter of Mrs. Jenkins, Lyla drew up the plans for Winston Lodge in an exercise book and the construction was erected from these primitive sketches. Winston Lodge finally opened for business on Saturday March 1st 1952 after many delays due to building material shortages and was an immediate success with local farmers and interstate truckies. The conditions were basic, but the food was excellent in the style of the period – soups, roast dinners and hot apple pies with fresh cream from a dairy on Halls Gap Road. All the cooking was done on a wood fired double oven stove with water pipes running through the firebox to provide the hot water for the Lodge. The name Winston Lodge is quite a story. The family of Mrs. Jenkins believe that a financial backer of the construction was a family by the name of Johnston. So, a combination of WINifred and JohnSTON became Winston Lodge. It was not named after the English Prime Minister of the day Sir Winston Churchill but maybe Winifred Jenkins was a supporter of the PM. Winifred eventually sold the Lodge in December 1957 and in the years since there have been many owners/proprietors and the building has been saved from demolition on more than one occasion. One of the proprietors was a Mr Len Hall, who at the time, was also the proprietor of the Café at the Stawell Drive- In Theatre where he served T-Bone steaks, hamburgers, hot dogs and fish & chips to the theatre goers. It was reported in the Stawell Times and Pleasant Creek Chronicle on Saturday March 5th 1960 that a sign had been erected at Winston Lodge to mark the opening of Stawell’s first Motel. Some small Motel units had been constructed on the Eastern side of Winston Lodge to cater for the travelling public and also for the truckies who had stopped for a meal and a comfortable bed. Even though the name ‘Winston Lodge’ disappeared from the front of the building in 2020 when renovations took place, it will always be referred to locally as ‘Winston Lodge.’ Two Black and White Photographs One building Lodge. Georg Lansell's brother Wootton Lansell's was Born in Margate, Kent, England, son of a grocer and tallow chandler.Worked as a seaman, with a mariner's certificate issued in 1844, he Arrived in Australia in 1850, initially working as a mounted trooper in Adelaide before moving to Bendigo in 1852 during the gold rush. After some success in gold prospecting, Lansell became a carpenter and then opened a butcher's store in View Point, Bendigo. He Invited his brothers George and William to join him; together they expanded into soap, candle, and tallow businesses. The partnership dissolved after three years, with Wootton turning to farming on 500 acres at Leichardt, while George became known as Bendigo's 'Gold King. Wotton Married Helen Hall in 1854 in Adelaide; they had one son (Thomas George William) and three daughters. Wootton invested in mining and was involved in several mining directorates. Around 1879, Wootton built a substantial brick and stone house (Myrtle Villa) with eight main rooms, which remains in the family. The house is notable for its original features, such as sand-colored tile-patterned wallpaper and a four-poster bed where nine of his ten grandchildren were born. The garden is sustained by a permanent spring and retains much of its original character. The house is still occupied by his descendants, notably his twin granddaughters Alice Lansell and Neva (Mrs. D. W. Jenkins). The family has preserved the home's historical character, with careful updates and retention of original furnishings and heirlooms. The Lansell name is closely associated with Bendigo's early gold-mining history and development. Ernest James Andrew was born in Eltham on 6 July 1873 and died at his home shown here in Arthur Street Eltham on 29 March 1950 aged 76. His father was William Bravery Andrew who ran corn store in Eltham at the corner of Franklin Street and Main Road and was a member of the Eltham Shire Council. Ernest also became a councillor and Shire President. His brother was also named William Bravery Andrew. The house was known locally as "Cook's Cottage" because of its resemblance to Captain Cook's Cottage in Fitzroy Gardens, Melbourne. Pages from a scrapbook belonging to Heather Jenkins (nee Cone) who lived as a child in the Police Residence at 728 Main Road, Eltham in the 1920s. See also 00183 Home to Cr. Ernie Andrew, newsagent and his wife Ellen. Known locally as Cook's Cottage due to its resemblance to Captain Cook's cottage in Fitzroy Gardens. Erected after Nov 1931 and before Dec 1945. The cottage was situated immediately adjacent to the east of the undergound carpark entrance off Arthur Street which used to be Commercial Place. Ernie Andrew's wife, Ellen, died 13 July 1946 and Ernie died 29 March 1950. Aerial photos show the cottage was still present in April 1963 but it had been demolished by April 1972 with a carpark extending from behind the new Eltham Village built on the former Shire Office site opposite through to Luck Street. McMahon) had a busy time during the week transferring all the books, documents, etc. of the council from the temporary offices (the shire secretary's residence at Kangaroo Ground) to the new offices. The new premises are owned by Mrs. E. J. Andrew, from whom the council has leased them, and consist of a five roomed brick villa which has been completed to meet the council's requirements. It would appear that this brick building was built on Andrew's land upon which he had loaned for use of Eltham's first Fire Station (Sep 1928 to June 1931) and based on aerial photos of Nov 1931, Dec 1945 and July 1951 was erected prior to Cook's Cottage.Heather Jenkins was the daughter of Constable John Thomas Cone, Badge #3935 served at Eltham Police Station 1 May 1911 to 9 July 1922.Glued on a brown paper scrapbook page (torn from scrapbook) with 8 black and white/sepia photos of varying sizes, 1 newspaper clipping and one greeting card with printed sketch and handwritten captions in ink. William was born in Northfleet, Kent, England in 1871. He arrived in Sydney in 1892 aged 21. In 1897 he married Elizabeth Agnes Cairns (born 1871 in Victoria dies 1936) at the Trinity Church East Melbourne. They had 5 children. In July 1922 he was appointed to Eltham Police Station after serving at Winchelsea. He would have been approx. 51 at that time. He was transferred to Cheltenham in February 1929. At that time he had been in the force over 30 years. He was a Mounted-Constable at Eltham. He died in Coburg aged 73 on 7 August 1944. The scrapbook mentions a daughter married a 'Wellman' who was Assistant Station Master at Eltham. Catherine Mary Sargeant married a Bertram William Wellman in 1925. On 2 July 1926, a Percy W. Wellman is mentioned in an article as an Assistant Station Master at Eltham. (Research notes from Alan Sheehan c.2014) Pages from a scrapbook belonging to Heather Jenkins (nee Cone) who lived as a child in the Police Residence at 728 Main Road, Eltham in the 1920s. Constable W.C. Sargeant, the local police officer in residence at Eltham, 1922-1927 who succeeded Constable John Thomas Cone in 1922. The Cones remained living in Eltham and retired Const. Whether the photo was taken in Eltham is unknown. William Henry Patrick Sargeant was born in 1898 and dies in 1985. His younger brother Gilbert Gerard Brudenell Sargeant (1906-1970) was a porter at Eltham Railway Station in 1924.
