Phillip Shillinglaw and four of his children arrived in the Port Phillip District in 184, travelling on the "India". The artist, Clifton Pugh, grew up in Briar Hill. He served in WWII and settled at Cottles Bridge, building his own house and forming Dunmoochin artist colony. He married three times and had two sons.
