Certificate - detailed coloured printing by Sands & McDougall Limited of Melbourne presented to Leon Joseph Villiers for his work on the Mangement Committee 1905 - 1908. Presented Feb. 23 1909. Has the image of a cable tram set and a horse-drawn omnibus along the top edge under the name of "Melbourne Tramway Employees Mutual Benefit Society". Certificate of Appreciation from the Mutual Benefit Society of the Employees of MTOCo to Mr T Edwin Wildie for services rendered to the Society. Dated Feb. 1914. Was signed by the President, Vice President, and secretary but these have faded. Comprises a group photograph of 28 men and at the bottom a portrait photo of Mr Wildie. Includes images of a cable tram set at Brunswick Depot, a horse-drawn Omnibus, the interior of an engine house and the construction of a cable tramway junction. Organisations such as 'Friendly Societies' were set up to protect and care for their members and communities at a time when there was no welfare state or National Health Service. The aim was and still is, to provide help to members and communities when they need it. The friendly societies are non-profit mutual organisations owned by their members. All income is passed back to the members in the form of services and benefits. The Oddfellows are also fundraisers for local and national charities; lodges raise money for local causes, and the society as a whole raise significant amounts for charities.
