After the 1939 bushfires, the Forests Commission Victoria invested heavily in a radically new communications network. After suffering some inevitable delays due to the war, radio VL3AA switched into full operation in October 1945 proudly beaming out 200 watts across the State. But by today’s standards, the technology was primitive and the reception poor unless the user was on a high point somewhere. The radio signal was "line-of-sight" and bounced between fire towers and relay transmitters across the mountains back to the District offices. The advent of solid-state electronics in the 1960s replaced the more delicate valve sets which enabled greater use of vehicle mounted radios. The Commission continued to research, develop and build new radios at its many workshops around Victoria. The network was supported by a large team of skilled radio technicians. The more secure and versatile State Mobile Radio (SMR) digital trunk system came into operation in about 1995. Upgraded Tait Radios were purchased in 2014 after recommendations of the 2009 Bushfires Royal Commission. But it was the convergence of separate technologies such as 5G mobile phones, high-capacity and light-weight lithium batteries, Wi-Fi, the ever-expanding internet, cloud data storage, digital cameras, GPS, personal organisers and hundreds of supporting Apps into powerful smartphones and tablets which revolutionised bushfire communications from the mid-2000s. Collected by National Serviceman Pte D J Kerslake from the site of an ambush initiated by 1 RAR in 1968. This is part of a collection that was donated by Private Daryl John Kerslake (3792440) who was a National Serviceman with the Australian Army with the Royal Australian Infantry Corps. He served in Vietnam with 1 Australian Reinforcement Unit from 22 Jun 68 to 30 Jun 68 and 1st Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment from 1 Jul 68 to 28 Feb 69.Olive green plastic with coloured filters stored in handle. This bottle of finishing ink was manufacturer by Ascot Manufacturing Co., a subsidiary of Melbourne pharmaceutical company Rocke Tompsitt & Co Ltd. Finishing ink was used by cobblers - and in this case, by shoe and boot owners at home - to colour and polish the raw cut edge of leather and to repair worn or damaged edges of shoe soles. It is difficult to determine exactly when this was made or used without more detailed records of Ascot Manufacturing's catalogue, but Rocke Tompsitt ceased independently operating in 1978 and their ownership of Ascot dates back at least to 1945, if not earlier. Rocke Tompsitt was founded in 1908.Finishing ink was historically used in the area for domestic maintenance of shoes and boots. This bottle was made by a defunct company in a style no longer in use.A bottle made of brown glass, with a brown paper label on the front side. The plastic lid is damaged, with only half of the screw cap remaining. Inside the bottle is a dry powder, likely the dried remains of the finishing ink. This is a set of 16 photographs taken during 4th Field Survey Squadron’s deployment on Operation ARIGHT 91 in Queensland from the 8th of July to the 5th of September 1991. The area of operations was the top end of the Cape York Peninsula, islands of the Torres Strait and the southern coast of PNG. Field parties utilised Texas Instruments TI4100 Global Positioning System receivers. Concurrent with GPS operations Doppler point positioning observations were carried out by field parties using Magnavox MX 1502 receivers on six of the control points. Two Bell UH-1H Iroquois helicopters from RAAF’s 171 COMD and Liaison Squadron were primarily used to deploy GPS field parties. This is a set of 16 photographs taken in 1985* during 4th Field Survey Squadron’s deployment on Operation NERVOSE 85 in the Northern Territory. Operation NERVOSE 85 was mounted by 4 Fd Svy Sqn in the EAST ARNHEM, VICTORIA RIVER DOWNS AND DALY WATERS areas from 26 May to 18 Sep 85. The aim of Operation NERVOSE 85 was to finalise the horizontal and vertical control for mapping at a scale of 1:50,000, to field check 40x 1:50,000 preliminary maps and to obtain mapping photography in support of the RAAF TINDAL redevelopment project. *Note –These photos were most likely taken in 1985, contrary to the ‘1987’ date annotated on the negative sleeves.
