Significant items relating to Albert Telfer White who entered Ballarat College April 1912 and left December 1918. Albert was born 29 June 1897 at his home 'Ashford Vale" farm, Cuthbert's Road, Cardigan. Albert, a second generation Australian, was the fourth son and sixth of eleven children born to dairy farmer John White and his wife Elizabeth, nee Douglas. Albert attended Bunker's Hill State School prior to enrolling at Ballarat College. After College he obtained employment with the engineering firm Ronaldson and Tippett in Ballarat. Following his eighteenth birthday Albert enlisted in the AIF in Ballarat with the rank of Private, No 2012. He embarked for the Middle East with 23rd Battalion on 26 August 1915 and was 'taken on strength at the Gallipoli Peninsular 25 October 1915". On 10 January 1916 Albert was posted to Alexandria, Egypt and during this time he was able to meet with his aunt Rose Douglas, an Australian Army Nursing Sister. This was a great comfort to his family. Albert was sent to France 19 March 1916 and transferred to the 22nd Battalion. He was mentioned in dispatches for 'good and gallant conduct' 5 August (1917?). Albert was hospitalised 30 March 1918, rejoined 22nd Battalion 3 June 1918, wounded in action 3 October 1918 but died of wounds at Rouen 10 October 1918. news of his death was received by his family n Australia just prior to the armistice. Founded in1903 when William E.Sessions and some of his family took over E.N.Welch Co. in Forestville. E.N.Welch Manufacturing Company used a local foundry to produce their castings. The foundry owner's son,William E.Sessions, took an interest in horology and ,along with other Sessions family members, bought controlling interest in the E.N.Welch Company., which was a joint stock corporation formed July 6th 1864 to succeed an older private firm who made clocks under the name of E.N.Welch. Elisha N. Welch (1809-1887),had been making clocks at a factory on East Main Street Forestville Conneticut after taking over J.C.Browns bankrupt business around 1856.Under William Sessions management the firm produced all components of their clocks including movements,cases,dials,artworks and castings.In 1930 the company expanded to produce electric clocks,timers for radios,televisions and other devices as well as their traditional brass mechanicial movements.In 1956 Sessions was absorbed by another company while retaining the name and in 1969 the business went into liquidation.Clock is made of black wood with Corinthian style columns,three set on each front corner. These are black metal, and show remains of gilt paint on top of columns.On the base of the clock is carved decoration with similar carvings on each of the four corners of square around clock face.Dial is cream with Roman numerals. the hands are set in gilt centre piece.Below the 12 is the name WELCH.The glass dial cover is edged in gilt. James Hartley originally came to Bendigo in 1895 for a cycling race and decided to move there. In 1901 he was joined by his brother William and they began manufacturing bicycles. They expanded into importing motorcycles. James Learmonth Shoosmith (1881-1942) became the manager of Hartley Bros. in 1914. He married Ethel May Rule (1884-1951) in 1908.
