Note with Stick. Kairivu New Guinea This carved stick is Kunja cane of New Guinea. When the war ended my company was in Kairivu, the last outpost in the world to get official notification of the Peace. During the time of waiting for the word from Wewak, for something to do, Dagwood Williamson with the aid of a pen-knife and a nail file carved the names of the places we had been and the name of our Stretcher Bearer Unit - 2/7 Battalion. Next to the Doctor at Regimental Aide Post [R.A. P.]. I was Sgt. in Charge of Stretcher Bearers and when Dagwood Williamson asked me to accept the cane for safe keeping I was pleased to do so. Home manicure sets became increasingly popular during the 1920s. The manicure tools are made of steel and the handles and case are fashioned from xylonite, a form of celluloid. Xylonite (derived from the Greek word ‘xylon’ meaning ‘wood’) is best known for use in products made by the British Xylonite Co. Ltd. Among the earliest items made from the material were knife handles, tubes and insulating materials for electric cables. Because of its light-weight and durability, xylonite became widely used in domestic items such as coral jewellery and manicure sets throughout the early twentieth century. This item does not bear a brand name but was manufactured in England c1932 This item is significant because it is representative of accessories used by women in the early part of the Twentieth century and was donated by a member of the Wodonga Community.A shell shaped manicure case made from xylonite or celluloid. Manicure items date back to Egyptian times, but manicure sets were almost completely reserved for the upper class until the early 19th century. A doctor of King Louis XV created what was recognised as the first manicure set. In the 1920s popularity of the manicure set increased. This was due to the changing role and perception of women as a result of World War I and also the wider availability of items such as coloured nail polish. It was influenced by the “flapper” era. The trends set by actresses such as Greta Garbo and Rita Hayworth in the latest technicolour movies inspired the popularity of the manicure amongst the woman of the “Roaring Twenties” This manicure is an example of the home and travel manicures sets which gained prominence at the time. They have continued to be a popular person item until the present day. Background to the story of the Apron - by Donor. "When I was a child, during World War 2, most women that I knew wore an apron for housework or farm duties. Not only were aprons easier to wash than dresses, they protected their coupon-rationed clothing. My mother worked hard, caring for her family and also working on our orchard in Doncaster. Mother always wore an apron. Those aprons so often carried eggs from the chook shed, fruit from the orchard or kindling for the fire. Most women made their own aprons, if not, they were readily available on stalls at church or school fetes. The Story of the Land Army Apron. I am a collector of embroidered aprons. Some years ago my mother gave me this apron saying it reminded her of one of the Land Army girls who worked on our orchard in Doncaster; (the hoeing, however, would have been around tomato plants, not flowers). The girls wore their full Land Army uniform when leaving the property. My Mother held particularly fond memories of one girl, a city girl from Hawthorn. mother could not recall her name but said she was a really hard worker and eager to learn all she could about growing fruit and vegetables. She lived with us sleeping in one room of our two bedroom sleepout. This apron is interesting for another reason - it has been embroidered using the sewing machine. Note the rows and rows of machining in the blue overalls and the way the loose bobbin thread forms tiny loops over the tight upper thread. The story continued: My nine year old aunt slept in the other room of the sleep out. Now 86 she also has fond memories of this girl from Hawthorn. Aunty Ness left the family farm at Torrumbarry (on the Murray, near Echuca) to help with the war effort. She worked at NASCO, a section of General Motors at Fisherman's Bend where Army Ducks and Landing Craft were in full production. Aunty Ness recalls that they had every second weekend off and made use of this time to catch up on all those necessary domestic and personal pursuits - they did their washing, washed their hair, filed their nails and wrote letters, They didn't go out during the week as there were no dances, no concerts and no films so they made their own entertainment. Aunty Ness also recalls that one day, when they had an unexpected afternoon off, she together with the Land Army girl and two friends packed a picnic lunch, caught the bus to Warrandyte and paddled in the Yarra, chatting and laughing all the while. In the telling it was obvious to me this was such a sweet memory so fondly recalled and relived in full technicolour! Alice Clague May 2009The cream calico apron is bound with royal blue binding. The pattern is that of a Land Army Girl, stitched using a sewing machine and cotton thread. The large hat and overalls were typical of the work clothes worn at the time.apron, machine embroidery

This Gestetner Cyclostyle duplicating machine was invented and manufactured by David Gestetner. He claimed in 1922, once he had released several models, that if a Gestetner Durotype stencil was used together with his Cyclostyle machine, then 10,000 copies could be made from the one Durotype stencil, an amazing claim for office technology of that era. David Gestetner (1854-1939), was born in Csoma, Hungary. He has been called the “founder of the worldwide office copying and duplicator industry.). He moved to London and in 1879 filed his first copying patent. In 1881 he patented the Cyclostyle stylus (or pen), which was used in conjunction with his Cyclograph device for copying text and images, He established the Gestetner Cyclograph Company in England at this time (1881) to protect his inventions and to produce his products; stencils, stylos (stylus or pen) and ink rollers. HIs inventions included nail-clipper and the ball-point pen (although the latter is more commonly associated with Laszlo Biro). Gestetner’s patented Cyclograph duplicator was used with his Cyclostyle Stylus or pen to write or draw on special thin wax-coated stencil paper (originally used for kite making paper) in the following way; 1. The Cyclostyle stencil was placed on a lower, framed metal plate of the Cyclograph 2. An upper frame was clipped over the top 3. The Cyclostyle pen, with its tip being a small metal-spiked or toothed wheel, was used to write or draw on the stencil, punched small holes into the paper and removed the wax coating in those places 4. The upper frame and stencil was then removed and a piece of blank paper was placed onto the metal plate in the lower frame and the upper frame with stencil was replaced 5. A roller was given an even distribution of Cyclostyle ink and rolled by hand over the stencil in the frame. This forced the ink through the holes in the stencil to and made a copy of the stencil on the paper 6. The upper frame was raised, the printed paper removed and another blank sheet was put into place. The whole process was repeated until enough copies were made. Gestetner’s invention developed further in 1894, with a stencil that could be placed on a screen on a revolving drum. The drum was manually rotated, the stencil then wrapped around another drum and was fed between cloth-covered rollers on which ink was evenly spread. Each revolution of the drum forced ink through the holes in the stencil and transferred the ink onto paper that had been fed between rollers and pressed against the drum. The process was repeated for each page. The paper was still fed and removed manually in this earlier invention but became more automatic in later models. In 1902 Gestetner duplicator model 6 was put onto the market. This model included the improvement of an automatic paper feed that synchronised with the rotation of the stencil. The Gestetner machine was the first office printing machine. It was easily installed and it made exact copies of the sane document quickly, effectively and inexpensively. This changed the way offices operated, making information easily available to many more users. The machines were commonly used in small businesses, schools, churches, clubs and other organisations for the wide distribution of a wide variety of information in the form of worksheets, newsletters and more. In 1906 the Gestetner Works were opened in Tottenham Hale, North London, and thousands of people were employed there up until the 1970’s. Due to the fast growing success of the Gestetner Duplicator machines many international branches for sales and service centres were established. David Gestetner was succeeded by his son Sigmund, followed by his grandson’s David and Jonathan. Further advancement was made by using a manual typewriter with specifically designed stencils. The end product was a printed, typewritten copy similar to the print from newspapers and booklets. In the next few years there were further developments of this revolutionary invention. The Gestetner Cyclostyle duplicator in our Collection is dated c.1922 - 1929 and it uses Gestetner Durotype stencils The 1922 British Industries Fair’s catalogue contained advertising for the Gestetner Rotary Cyclostyle “The World’s Premier Duplicator”, demonstrated at Stand K 86.” A Notice at the foot of the advertisement’s page boasts "Important - D Gestetner's latest invention, the "Durotype" Stencil, enables you to obtain 10,000 copies from one original if desired. It contains no wax of any description, is indestructible, can be stored indefinitely and printed from as required” In 1929 the look of the Gestetner machines changed; American designer Raymond Loewy was invited by Gestetner to improve the look of his duplicators, resulting in a very streamlined appearance. Eventually, around 1960’s, offices replaced their Gestetner with small photocopying machines and printers. Gestetner took over ownership of other office machine companies over time, including Nashua, Rex Rotary, Hanimex and Savin and eventually all came under the holding company name of NRG (Nashuatech, Rex Rotary and Gestetner). In 1996 Ricoh acquired the Gestetner Company, and it was renamed the NRG Group. George Barraclough (1907-1981), a landholder from north of Licola, in the Victorian Great Divide, made a number of these spikes, as needed. As accounts were paid, receipts were pasted to the account, the account was impaled on the spike, and the spike was rehung on a nail on a wall stud. All transactions dealing with money were filed in this manner, as an orderly way of tracking items that were usually remotely ordered and delivered on the mail car. George Barraclough used No8 in a number of creative ways, and his durable and untilitarion toasting forks are still in family use today. After George died in 1981 the spikes with their accounts passed to his daughter Linda Barraclough, who archived the accounts and later made copies available for study. Those accounts form a record of the businesses of Heyfield for 1940s and 1950s.This bill hook is of historical significance as a survivor of bush ingenuity and bush filing systems. Commercially made bill spikes were in common use in offices, where they usually consisted of a heavy metal base with an upright pointed piece of wire. Number 8 fencing wire was an important and readily accessible repair commodity for rural dwellers, and achieved iconic status as the most generic method of repair for cars broken down (resort to nearest fence) and was even used to hold houses together. Referring to "No 8 fencing wire" became a type of Australian shorthand for bush ingenuity. It is no longer available, being replaced by 4mm high tensile wire. This item is important both as an example of inventive use of No8 wire, and also as an example of the bush filing methods in use in the 1940s and 1950s. No 8 fencing wire holds a similar position in New Zealand - see Wikipedia NZ at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Number_8_wire A section of number 8 fencing wire twisted to form a bill spike. It has a rounded.base made from several twists of wire in a flat platform, with the remaining wire rising from the centre to form a stem that terminates in a hook with a sharpened point.wire, bush ingenuity, barraclough, licola north
