... ...Nanga Gnulle...Jack Lockett Mabel Ingwersen Olympic flame in Bendigo Faith Leech Olympic games 1956 Nanga Gnulle Three white A4 paper pages with black print The first is titled - Jack Lockett & Faith Leech Commence Countdown to Bendigo Olympic Torch. ...John Henry Lockett OAM (22 January 1891 – 25 May 2002) was the oldest man ever in Australia when he died aged 111 years, 123 days. As one of the last surviving veterans of World War I, he was acclaimed as a national hero during the last decade of his life. Lockett was born in the small Victorian town of Waanyarra, near Bendigo. He left school aged nine to work on a local farm. Later, he worked for his uncles in the Mallee. On 24 March 1916, he travelled to Mildura to enlist in the Australian Imperial Force. He served in France with the 38th Battalion, earning promotion to sergeant and was discharged on 20 September 1919. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Lockett After the war, Jack returned to The Mallee and selected a 640 acres (260 ha) block of land in Linga, Victoria, deciding to make his living as a farmer. In 1923, he married Maybell Ingwerson and they had four children together. In 1963, the couple retired to Bendigo, leaving the farmland (which now covered more than 130,000 acres (53,000 ha), in the care of their children and grandchildren . The 2000 Olympic flame was relayed from Olympia in Greece to Sydney by 13400 carriers including 11000 Australians, each carrier had their own torch. Daryl McClure said Jack Lockett is a national treasure and living legion "We are thrilled that Mr. Lockett has thrown his support behind the Olympic Torch's visit to Bendigo in July 2000. " Cr. McClure said Faith Leech was also a Bendigo treasure, winning a gold and a bronze medal at the Melbourne Olympic games. The second is titled - General Information Faith Leech A description of Faith Leech's swimming career including from the age of 12 winning at the Junior event at the Victorian Championships. Next was the Australian open championship where she won the 110 yards freestyle becoming the youngest person the win an Australian Championship. At the Melbourne Olympic Games, she won an individual bronze medal in 100 metres freestyle and a gold medal in the 4 x 100 metres freestyle with Dawn Fraser, Sandra Morgan and Loraine Cap. Just prior to the 1957-58 season, it was announced that acting on medical advice, Faith was retiring. The third is titled - General information Jack Lockett A brief description of Jack life including Born in Waanyarra January 1891, moved to Linga in 1914, joined the Army in 1916 and discharged 19 Aug 1919, married Mable Victoria (Dolly) in 1923. In 1953 he moved to Mafeking Street Bendigo, in August 1998 he moved to the Bendigo Health Care Group's Carshalton House. Jack was awarded the 80th Anniversary Armistice Remembrance Medal.
