James Tyson (1819-1898) was the son of a convict mother and her free migrant husband. Benefiting from Lachlan Macquarie's policy to 'dungaree settlers', they eked out a precarious living for themselves and their family on a small grant in the Narellan District and did seasonal work for neighbouring landholders.
