Historical information

James Tyson (1819-1898) was the son of a convict mother and her free migrant husband. Benefiting from Lachlan Macquarie's policy to 'dungaree settlers', they eked out a precarious living for themselves and their family on a small grant in the Narellan District and did seasonal work for neighbouring landholders. When James died almost 80 years later he was an established pastoral multi-millionaire. This text focuses on his life.
