This RAAF dress uniform and other associated article of clothing was owned by Walter Alexander Scott. Joined RAF December 1940 to be trained as a pilot, he got his wings December 1941, became a night fighter pilot after OTU and posted to 219 Squadron. Was posted to 603 Squadron December 1942 flying Beaufighters on coastal command convoy escorts, desert patrols, supporting Sicilian and Italian invasions (all from the N.African desert, then on Greek Island " Armed Rovers" until 10 November 1943, just at the end of ops, when he was shot down in the Aegean Sea and became a POW the next day 11 November 1943. Transferred to Germany he was in Stalag IVB for 3 months, before exchanging ID with an Irish soldier ,in order to get out of the main camp into a working sub-camp in order to escape. Post war Walter returned to Australia, he became "Citizen of the Year" in Werribee 1992 for his service to the community. In 1993 he was awarded the Order of Australia Medal for services to youth and to the retired.

Navy blue dress of synthetic crepe fabric. Length to just below the knee. Elbow length set in fitted sleeves. Square neckline. Narrow shoulder sections gathered into bodice at each corner of neckline at front. Decorative buttons on seam- three each side (two missing on LHS).Padded shoulders. Three horizontal pleats at waist line that taper and narrow at centre back. Centre back opening fastened with thirty one fabric covered buttons and cotton cord loops Skirt made from two sections. Front section ungathered. Back section has four inverted pleats falling from 15 cms below the waist to create fullness. Clothing. Navy blue velvet, on a brass frame, with a 34 cm long brass chain. A ''push-button'' 1.2 cm diameter, fastens the bag. A decorative, oval brass loop is attached to the centre of the frame. The velvet fabric is tightly gathered onto the frame. One side panel of the bag is exquisitely embroidered in a ''corded'' floral design, in pink, blue and greens. The bag is lined with a smokey blue watermark silk, with a flat pocket on one side. Clothing. Pure wool, dark navy blue blazer, as part of the Official uniform of Officials at the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games. Revere collar with pointed lapels-one button hole on left lapel. Two large (20.5 cm X 20.0cm) pockets, with rounded lower corners - one on either side front. 14 cm X 13 cm breast pocket with rounded corners of the lower edge, and embroidered Olympic Rings and wording ''Olympic Games 1956 Official''. Fully lined - body in black satin, sleeves in cream satin. Double breasted, with four 2cm diameter flat silver metal buttons. Clothing. Navy blue silk dress with V neckline faced in soft pink silk, which is overlaid with navy rouleau, giving a ''lattice'' effect, and then the neckline has been bound with navy fabric. The lower edge and side is decorated with three, four-petalled flowers, backed with navy fabric, with navy covered buttons in each centre, and navy tipped, pink rouleau 'stems'. Three X 2 cm diameter navy covered buttons are spaced on either side of neckline. Six X 1cm wide loose pressed(not stitched) pleats and two 2 cm pleats form a panel from neckline to waist of bodice. This pleating continues from the waistline, and is stitched horizontally for 31 cm below the waistline, before falling in a pressed form to the hemline. Back of skirt is plain, with top stitched centre back seam, which opens into a (X2) 5.5 cm wide inverted pleat at centre back. Long sleeves are also pleated-stitched down horizontally, for 17 cms, then pressed(not stitched) to the cuff. An item forming part of a collection of costumes, photographs and documents relating to the Weir family who lived in a mansion, originally named Illapa, at 84 Princess Street, Kew, from c.1917 to 1950. This historically significant collection includes items relating to both George Weir (1866-1937), his wife Edith Mary Weir (1867-1948) and their children. George Weir attained national prominence in the mining industry, becoming General Manager of the North Broken Hill Silver Mining Company in 1903 (later renamed North Broken Hill Mining Company 1905-12, and North Broken Hill Ltd 1912-1988), and subsequently President of the Mine Owners Association. He was to remain General Manager of North Broken Hill Ltd until his retirement in 1926.This garment is part of a collection of women’s clothing, owned and worn by Edith Mary Weir (nee Betteridge) - born in Clare, South Australia 1867, died Kew 1948 - and also by her daughter. The garments date from the 1880s to the 1930s. The collection includes day dresses, evening dresses, evening coats, capes, and undergarments. As the wife and daughter of a mine manager, the collection includes representative examples of clothing worn by upper middle class Australian women in domestic circumstances, and at social and civic events. A number of the costumes from the 1920s to the 1930s are of a particularly fine quality, being both rare, representative and intact examples of Australian fashion of the period. The garments in the Weir Collection were donated to the Kew Historical Society by a granddaughter of Edith Weir in 2017.Long navy blue crepe fitted dress featuring long narrow sleeves.
