Mrs Clare Roper wore this dress to a garden party at Buckingham Palace when she was invited there to represent the Lions Club.The Roper Family is one of the pioneering farming families of the Kiewa Valley. They built and used Ropers Hut on the High Plains. The dress worn by Clare Roper has historical significance as it represents the importance of the CWA which Claire Roper was involved with as President thus being invited to Buckingham Palace. The dress also shows the fashions of the time and indicates ladies living in the small country towns still viewed fashion as important. Since we know it was Clare Ropers dress it is well provenances, is in reasonable condition and has very good interpretive capacity. This brown shirt waister dress has an 'A' line skirt with an inverted pleat on the lower half of both the front and back. The dress has a 'Peter Pan' collar, matching belt, pockets and short sleeves. There are 3 bound button holes and buttons, gold set with pearls, only one is complete. The front top, cuffs and pockets are embroidered with cream lace. There is a press stud and hook at the neck. Tobacco farming began circa 1960 in the Kiewa Valley and consequently became one of its major industries. Many of the Italian families were involved in tobacco farming.Historical: This equipment was used on one of the first tobacco farms in the Kiewa Valley at Mongans Bridge. The picking apron was home-made showing the resourcefulness of farmers living in the Kiewa Valley. Picking machines replaced the picking apron. Provenance: This tobacco farmer came from Italy and was sponsored to visit a tobacco farmer in Myrtleford to learn how to grow tobacco so that he could transfer those skills to his own farm in the Kiewa Valley.The apron was used to gather green leaf before picking machines were made. Thick cotton cream apron, hemmed around the outside. Widest at the waist which has 2 rings each side where string is attached with a knot to tie around the waist. From the ring, material tapers inwards to form a bib. The corners of the bib have rings from which white rope is attached to hang around the neck. Similariy material tapers to the bottom where rings in the corners have rope attached - also to hang around the neck. Part of the Uebergang Collection. Made by the firm of Triaca & Picchi. Camilo Triaca (1887-1972) was a sculptor born Tuscany, Italy. He arrived in Melbourne in 1909 and practised his craft in Richmond, Melbourne, before returning to Italy in 1914 to serve in the Italian Army. He returned to Melbourne in 1923 and continued to sculpt at his Richmond home before relocating to Fitzroy. A 1927 image of workers at his studio workshop taking a lunch break is in the Italian Historical Society collection (http://trove.nla.au/version172106091). The workshop was situated at 76-78 King William St, Fitzroy.Plaster figurine depicting a boat with a girl sitting in the front holding the rope of an anchor and a boy holding the back of the boat which is up on the sand. A leather apron would have been worn as a protective garment by blacksmiths. It would have helped to them from sparks and other hazards whilst they were working. Early businesses in Portland included a blacksmith. This would have been vital to the town and its development. Although the provenance of the apron is unknown it is possible that this belonged to a Portland blacksmith.Brown leather apron. Leather neck strap with metal. Metal buckle to the side. This homemade, handmade splicer is an example of a tool used to splice a cable or rope, a craft that was in much need onboard a sailing ship. Rudder from the tug boat YORK SYME, built in 1961 by ADELAIDE SHIP CONSTRUCTION INTERNATIONAL - PORT ADELAIDE, AUSTRALIA. It is sailing under the flag of the Cook Islands. Its gross tonnage is 149 tons. The rudder is believed to come from a lifeboat previously attached to the Tug. The tug York Syme operated in various ports in New Zealand until around 2011. It is believed this is when it went to the Cook Islands. The registered owner is unknown at this time.The rudder is from the 1961 Tug York Syme. Its size suggests it was from the tug's lifeboat or ancillary boat. It is an example of marine technology from the mid-20th century. Although small, it works on similar principles to 19th-century rudders from the large sailing ships. This is a souvenir mug produced for visitors to the ‘Mary Rose’ Exhibition in Warrnambool (December 1994 to February 1995). The ship ‘Mary Rose’, built in Portsmouth, England in 1509-10, was historically of major significance. She was the spearhead of a master plan to give England superiority on the high seas. Using new technology of the time, heavy artillery was mounted on the lower decks of this ship and this overloaded the ship. In 1545 she sank in Portsmouth Harbour with the loss of 700 lives as she was about to set sail to defend the English against the French invaders. In 1982 the hull of this ship was raised to the surface and the contents recovered. Over 200 items from the wreck were brought to Warrnambool and displayed in 1994-5 at the Warrnambool Art Gallery. This is a souvenir from a interesting and major exhibition which was held in Warrnambool in 1994/95. It is one of a number of items which were massed produced for the event.Cream ceramic jug which has a fluted rim . Sister Short is writing down information being given by patient Sue Rowley who will be discharged from the Hospital. It will be phoned through to the appropriate RDNS Centre where it is recorded by the Clerical staff and passed to the RDNS Sister who will visit Sue on her discharge. Liaison had occurred between Doctors and the Trained nurses of the Melbourne District Nursing Society (MDNS), from its inception in 1885. This increased when Midwifery was introduced in 1893 with close liaising with the Women’s Hospital. As District nursing grew it was recognized that closer liaising between many Public Hospitals would be beneficial, for not only the MDNS, later called Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS), nursing staff, but also for the patients and the hospitals. In August 1964 a Liaison Officer commenced at the Alfred Hospital. This soon increased to Liaison Officers working full time at several Public Hospitals. They facilitated the smooth transition from hospital to home for many patients who required ongoing nursing care. Liaison Sisters regularly attended discharge planning meetings, interviewed prospective clients, co-ordinated discharge and booked the first visit by the visiting RDNS staff. At the time of a patient’s discharge, the Liaison Sister forwarded information on their diagnosis and instructions regarding the care required at home to the appropriate RDNS Centre, and in turn the attending District Sister wrote a report of progress and any queries to the hospital doctor, via the Liaison Sister, at the time the patient was attending outpatients. Any new instructions were then sent back to the District Sister. Liaising also occurred between District Sisters in the field and Doctors when patients were referred by General Practitioners and did not attend a hospital. A Physiotherapist worked under contract to teach transfer techniques to RDNS Sisters before RDNS employed there own Physiotherapist who taught staff the correct techniques, not only for safety of the patient, but to reduce physical strain on RDNS nursing staff and patient’s family members.
