A page from a Weekly Bulletin in 1970 farewelling two Legatees. It was in a folder of documents about the history of Legacy. So their service may have been particularly important. The folder appears to have been mostly compiled by Legatee Cyril Smith as he has many hand written notes on miscellaneous pieces of paper (some are envelopes addressed to him). The notes were typed up into a summary of the History of Legacy. Also documents relating to the first time Legacy approached the public for donations in September 1956, including newspaper articles that were reprinted, a schedule of information that was approved to be released to the press, and a list of potential donors that was circulated to Legatees in the hope they could contact the ones they knew personally or professionally. The documents from this folder have been added in seperate records (see 01262 to 01282). The folder was part of an attempt to capture history of Legacy, generally from the 1950s.These obituaries were kept with historical documents though the reason is unclear. The documents provide an insight into the working of Legacy, especially in the 1950s. SS New Australia was a UK-built turbo-electric passenger steamship that had a varied career from 1931 to 1966. She was built as the ocean liner Monarch of Bermuda, was a troop ship in the Second World War and was damaged by fire in 1947. She was then refitted to carry emigrants to Australia and renamed New Australia. In 1958 she was refitted again, renamed Arkadia and served as both a transatlantic liner and a cruise ship.The ship originally had three funnels. Thornycroft rebuilt her with a single funnel, plus an unusual bipod structure aft of her bridge that served as both a funnel and a mainmast. The MoT renamed her New Australia, contracted Shaw, Savill & Albion Line to manage her and put her into service carrying UK emigrants to Australia. She plied this trade from 1950 until 1957. The poem "Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels" was written by H. (Bert) Beros and published in the Courier Mail (Brisbane) on 31 October 1942.This poem gained popularity and was widely read and then published privately by Beros running to several editions. The bookmark produced in 1943 is an example of how revered and popular in the Australian public mind the New Guinea natives became. This bookmark is significant in its association with the popular legend of the loyalty and self sacrifice of the New Guinea natives popularly termed Fuzzy Wuzzy. with the added sobriquet of Angels, in their support of the Australians in New Guinea in World War II without which Australia may not have been able to halt the Japanese advance. Robin Boyd developed a close friendship with the founder of the Bauhaus in Weimar Germany, Walter Gropius, who had moved to the USA in the 1930s. Through this connection, Boyd was invited to be the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Bemis Professor at the School in the North American academic year 1956-7. Robin and Patricia Boyd, with their youngest daughter Suzy, were based in Cambridge, Massachusetts for the year. Boyd gave some lectures at MIT and he was also invited to give lectures at many other universities, allowing him to travel widely within the USA, especially on the East Coast. This gave him the opportunity to meet architects like Frank Lloyd Wright, Eero Saarinen, Paul Rudolph and many others, and visit the offices of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, and places like Taliesin and the General Motors Technical Center Detroit. ANZAC Commemorative Medallion is issued to all members of the Australian Defence Force and New Zealand Defence Force who served on the Gallipoli Peninsula. The medallion is also known as the Gallipoli Medallion.The personnel receiving the medallion served on the Gallipoli Peninsula from 25 April 1915 to the final date of evacuation in January 1916.The medallion is round the obverse depicts Simpson and his donkey carrying a wounded soldier to safety. It is bordered on the lower half by a laurel wreath above the word ANZAC. The reverse shows a map in relief of Australia and New Zealand superimposed by the Southern Cross. The lower half will be boardered by the New Zealand Fern Leaves. There is a crown at the top of the medallion. The medallion is cast in bronze.This medallion has the name W.E. Penleigh Boyd, Robin and Patricia Boyd's son, writes “Prior to 1950 Robin, like most other amateur or hobby photographers, took black and white printed photographs. The oldest slides date from 1950 when Robin and Patricia travelled to Europe on Robin’s Robert Haddon Travelling Scholarship.” In 1948 Robin Boyd was awarded ‘joint first place’ in the Robert Haddon competition for his design of Mildura art gallery. The scholarship helped fund their first overseas trip. Robin and Patricia were passengers on the Greek ship “Cyrenia” departing in May 1950, passing through the Suez Canal and landing in Genoa five weeks later. For six months, they travelled extensively throughout Europe (predominantly driving themselves) - France, Italy, United Kingdom, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Spain.Colour slide in a mount.
