Prayer/hymn book owned by Ron Nicholls who was a member of St Mark's Church, Emerald, from the time he moved to Emerald with his family until he left to join the RAAF early in World War 2. From 1938 to 1940 he was an assistant propagator. The letters of reference are written by (1) Ronald Lloyd, Vicar of St Mark's, dated 16 November 1936; (2) and (3) F.G. Wood, foreman propagator, Nobelius Nursery, dated 19 August 1940 and 17 April 1941. The letter from Harcourt State School, dated 14 June 1943, is addressed to Emerald State School seeking information about Ron Nicholls, with whom he has been corresponding while Nicholls was in New Guinea with the RAAF. The foolscap sheet contains a list of names of Emerald residents included in correspondence from Ron Nicholls' mother during the war (see below under 'Other information'), and further details about Ron's life. The hand-written remnant was written by Ron Nicholls to his mother from Emerald when he was a child. The news clippings describe (1) a children's fancy dress night held at Emerald School; (2) a coming of age party held for Jack Hirst; and (3) injury received by Geoffrey Kennedy of Macclesfield, when gored by a bull. Work diaries kept by Ron Nicholls, assistant propagator at Nobelius Nursery from 1938 to 1940, when he left to join the RAAF. The diaries detail specific work tasks undertaken at the nursery. The diaries, two photographs and a prayer book were donated by his widow, Mrs Ron Nicholls. Letters written by his mother to Ron Nicholls during his time in the air force are believed to have been donated to the RAAF Museum (to be checked). The diaries are important as a record of work carried out in the area that is now Nobelius Heritage Park. Ron Nicholls moved from Queensland to Emerald with his family in 1925. Carl Axel Nobelius 1851-1921, was a Swedish migrant who started the Gembrook Nurseries in 1892 which at their peak (just before WWI) were the biggest in the Southern Hemisphere.He was renowned as a nurseryman and was a significant employer in Emerald.Trees from his nursery were bought by the Melbourne Botanic Gardens and inner city Melbourne municipalities for their parks and gardens as well as by councils and individuals throughout Australia and the world. Oscar Nobelius was the son of Carl Axel Nobelius. After marryinhg Florence Prescott they moved to Narre Warren where they started an orchard.
