The Northern District School of Nursing opened in 1950 in to address the issues around nurse recruitment, training and education that had previously been hospital based. The residential school was to provide theoretical and in-house education and practical training over three years. The students would also receive practical hands-on training in the wards of associated hospitals. The Northern District School of Nursing operated from Lister House, Rowan Street, Bendigo. It was the first independent school of nursing in Victoria and continued until it closed in 1989. The book "The First of its Kind" was published in 2015. Printed in Bendigo by "Bendigo Modern Press". Maud McCarthy had a profound influence on nursing, serving overseas throughout WWI and then later becoming "one of the first senior nurses to recognise the impact of war on minds, she set up separate units for men who had self-harmed and she pioneered nurse anaesthetists in the British Armed Forces" (-Rosemary Shields). Somerville's new child-care centre has been named the Annie Sage Child-Care centre. Annie embarked on her nursing career by training at the old Melbourne Hospital, later becoming matron of the Baby Heath Centre Association Training School in Carlton. In World War 2 she was appointed matron-in-chief of the Royal Australian Army Nursing Corps and saw service in the Middle East and Pacific areas. Colonel Sage was awarded the CBE, the Red Cross Medal and the Florence Nightingale Medal. Later she appointed lady superintendent of the Women's Hospital. The newspaper clipping is an obituary for Agnes Ivy Clyne, also known as Sunbury's grand old lady. Agnes, [known as Ivy], died at the age of 95 on March 17 [1995]. Her funeral service was attended by friends and relatives on March 22 [1995]. Born April 29 1899, Ivy began her nursing career in her late teens, being a hospital matron before the outbreak of WWII. During the war she worked at the military hospitals in Heidelberg, Broken Hill and Bendigo, being promoted to Captain of the Nurse Corps. Ivy married in early 1948, but had no children. The news story is about the recollections of Miss Jean Hardham, as she attended the a reunion of war nurses at ANZAC House, Melbourne. Former Williamstown Hospital matron and Army nurse, Jean said that although the hardships and horrors of the battlefields in the Middle East are almost as vivid today as when they actually happened forty-four years ago, she would go through the experience again if she lived her life over. Jean had never wanted to do anything other than nurse, so she left Australia in 1940 as a member of the Ambulance Sea Transport Unit of a ship carrying 15,000 soldiers to the battlefields of Palestine and Egypt. 1941 saw her headed to Asia, fleeing the Japanese during the fall of Singapore. After the war, Jean worked at various Victoria hospitals and tutured at the Darley Army training camp. Her nursing career ended at the Williamstown Hospital, where she was matron until her retirement in 1971. A large story about women who worked for their country during World War II. Elizabeth Simpson Elizabeth had been a bush nurse and a nursing sister at the Alfred Hospital before she joined the army nursing corps in 1941. Her first posting was Heidelberg Hospital, with her second in the Middle East. Elizabeth tended wounded from the Battle of Alamein. At the end of the war Elizabeth spent three months in Singapore nursing Japanese POW's - men from Changi and women from Sumatra. After the war Elizabeth made a career of nursing. June Fox At the age of 17 in 1943 June signed up for the Victorian Land Army. She soon found herself at a mixed farm near Lakes Entrance. The award was given to students in Victorian schools for advanced prowess in swimming and lifesaving. Mirth Marfell was a student at Warrnambool High School in 1935 when she received the cloth badge for attaching to a blazer or other item of clothing. Warrnambool High School was established as an Agricultural High School in 1907 and, after a merger with Warrnambool North Technical School, it is known today as Warrnamboool College. Mirth Marfell, the daughter of Henry and Helena Marfell, was born in Warrnambool in 1919. Her grandfather, John Marfell, a Warrnambool hay and corn dealer and miller connected to the Warrnambool Co-operative Milling Company, was prominent in community and civic affairs in the town. Mirth Marfell completed her nursing training at the Warrnambool Base Hospital and served in the Australian Army Nursing Service in World War Two for five years. She then became the first Australian nursing organizer for the Victorian Royal College of Nursing.
