The Bridge Hotel was built by Henry Hopwood to house visitors to the town crossing the Murray River on his punt crossing, which was situated just below the Bridge Hotel on the Murray River. The accommodation was spacious and grand! In the right back corner of the photograph, the 'lantern' roof of the St Georges Hall can be seen. A walk around Little Eltham, 21 June 2017. Eltham’s first industrial area at the end of present day Pitt Street near the Diamond Creek. Just upstream a bit, near these oak trees was the flour mill. The most significant owner of that was Henry Dendy. Better known for founding Brighton but he lived in Eltham longer than he lived in Brighton, during the 1860s. There was also the brewery and slightly downsteam from here was the tannery. The brewery needed fresh clean water so it was upstream from the tannery. The Oak trees were most likely planted during Henry Dendy's time. This magnificent English oak tree is located at Tea Tree Lake park in Mortlake. This park was formerly the Botanic Gardens which were developed on what had been swamp land. An artificial lake was created there in 1988 as a Bi-Centenary project.The tree is located adjacent to the historic Montgomery Pavillion and was planted on the occasion of Her Majesty Queen Victoria's birthday on 24th May 1883.
