The State Governor Sir Rohan Delacombe and Lady Delacombe visited the Shire of Eltham where they were entertained to a civic luncheon by the Shire President Cr. L. E. Clarke and councilors at the Panton Hill hotel and made a tour of the shire. Among which was the Eltham elderly citizens' club where he met L-R: Mrs Lander, Mrs Stevenson, Mrs Armstrong, Mrs Norman, Mrs - , and Mrs Crockett. More than 1000 women veterans of World War II were welcomed by the Prime Minister in the Great Hall of Parliament House. Among them was Rita Kneebone, who had served with the Voluntary Aid Detachments (VAD) on Labuan Island, Borneo. Also among them was Jean Syres and Mary Canty, who between them, served with the VAD in Palestine, Syria, Egypt and Papua New Guinea. Giving the address on behalf of all female veterans was May Douglas, the only surviving director of women's army services, served in Australia and Papua New Guinea. Miss Jane Elizabeth (Jean) Pearson is second from the left. From c1927 - c1950 Miss Pearson had the cake and confectionery shop at 147 Union Road. It was later a milk bar, next to Henry Jamieson’s radio and electrical shop. Miss Pearson sold Farey’s cakes which were very popular and in a trellised-off section also served morning and afternoon teas. Her sisters often helped. Silversticks, white knights, licorice straps were among a wide selection of sweets to be bought for 1d. – or even ½d. Jean was one of a large family born to John William Pearson and Agnes Yeaman. Jean was born at Riddell's Creek in c1884. She died in 1966. She had 3 brothers and a total of 6 sisters. Lillias Irene and Grace Stewart died in infancy or childhood, so the other sisters in the photo were (not necessarily in order): Ethel Agnes born in 1885, who married James Charles Robertson; Catherine Myra born in 1887, unmarried; May Dempster born 1891, unmarried; and Stella Christie born 1897, who married Cecil Hunt Aston in 1928. Jean was in business as a confectioner at 3 High Street, Malvern in 1927; in Union Road 1941-1949 and resided (presumably in retirement) at 37 Mayston Street, Hawthorn in 1954. At the later address May and Catherine are also listed variously in 1954 and 1963. (Ref: electoral rolls). The Hawthorn address was the 'family home' - address of John William Pearson who died in 1944, appointing Jean as his executrix. The article tells how playwright, John Misto, won first prize and $20,000 in the Australia Remembers National Play Competition and proceeded to donated his winnings to the help fund a nurses memorial in Canberra. John's play, The Shoehorn Sonata, tells the story of an army nurse in a Japanese prisoner of war camp during World War II. John decided to donated his winnings after finding out, during his research for the play, that nurses did not have a war memorial. He stated that it was mindboggling how brave the nurses were in the conditions and that he didn't want them and their work to continue to be unknown. Nurses have cared for the sick and wounded in every conflict in which Australia has committed troops, from the Boer war to present day. Ex-service nursing organisations and the Royal College of Nursing, Australia convened a committee to plan a memorial. The committee want to unveil a national memorial at the centenary of the raising of the first military nursing service celebrations in 1999. The memorial will cost about $1.5 million and be funded by nurses, nursing organisations and donations and depict the various environments where nurses served. Wilma Young and Betty Jeffery were at Anzac House to launch 'Our War Nurses', by Rupert Goodman. Together they survived three years in a POW camp during World War 2, after surviving the sinking of the Vyner Brooke in 1942. Of the 65 nurses on board only 24 made it home to Australia. Betty said while nursing discipline and friendship helped her survive the camp, life after they came home wasn't easy either. She spent two years in hospital to "get right again', then wrote her book, 'White Coolies' about her experiences. Dr Rupert Goodman has spent three years writing his book, 'Our War Nurses', as a "memorial to some of those brave women who have helped in our war years". The book traces the history of the Royal Australian Army Nursing Crorps from 1902 and the Boer War to today. Dr Goodman met with three of the women who inspired the book, Wilma Young, Betty jeffrey and Margaret O'Bryan. In Februrary 142, a ship ferrying 65 Australian nurses from Singapore to Australia was bombed by the Japanese.
