George Richard Oldfield was a butcher. Thomas Crouch Watts was born on March 7th. 1865, to Joseph and Susan Watts. Before the real estate business commenced, Thomas and his brother were in partnership as booksellers and stationers in a shop at View Point. Thomas lived in a fine house in Rowan Street, which was called 'Ottawa' Thomas started his real estate business in the early 1900s in a shop in View Street. His daughter Edna was the book keeper and typist, Stewart Watson was the salesman and Stanley Phipps (Edith Lunn's father) was the property manager and valuer. When Thomas Watts died in 1914, his daughter took over the running of the business. She married Stewart Watson in 1918. Eventually the name of the business was changed to Bishop and Earl. From a letter from Edith Lunn re T.C. Watts & Son. 'The firm of T.C. Watts & Son later became Bishop and Earl. When the firm of Bishop and Earl ceased to operate after the death of Edith Lunn's father, S.P. Bishop, Miss. June Parry, Secretary of the BHS was a member of staff. June rescued all the photos of properties listed for sale from the office and placed them into the custody of the BHS.' Black and white photograph mounted on rectangular grey board. This site was originally that of Cobb and Co's livery stable and although the Cobb and Co office in the Shamrock Hotel closed in 1886, the livery stable continued with the proprietors, Robertson and Wagner and Co. The site was bought in August 1898 by the Fresh Food and Frozen Storage Co, proprietors of the Bendigo Butter Factory. On this site the company built an ice tory, refrigerating works and cool storage for other businesses. The Bendigo Butter Factory was begun in 1894 in Lucan Street, opposite the distillery, by Mr McIntyre of the Rochester district. This site included a butter printer and Weigher supplied by Cherry and Son of Gisborne. In September 1895 the Butter factory was floated as a public company and was registered by Mr J H Curnow. However the factory was not financially sound at this point and entered into receivership in 1896. At this time it was bought by the Fresh Food and Frozen Storage Company of Melbourne and was placed under the management of James Cumming, an experienced dairyman. The company had previously appointed him as their inspector of creameries. By 1911 he was the propietor of the Flora Hill Butter Factory. and was later killed in a car accident in May 1937. By 1919 the manager was Douglas Orson Oldfield (1868-1944) (NB at birth he was registered as Dugald and throughout his life he was also known as Dan).Colour photograph. The office of The Sentinel or Wodonga and Towong Sentinel newspaper was in High Street, Wodonga. The Sentinel began operation in 1885 and was owned, managed and edited by James Ryan. It was published weekly until he was killed by a train at Wodonga station on 27 July 1912. James Ryan was born in Beechworth in 1861 and served his apprenticeship with the printing business of the "Ovens and Murray Advertiser”. For a time, he worked on the Melbourne "Herald”, followed by the Ballarat “Courier”. With a fellow printer, William Oldfield Taylor, he moved to Wodonga and they began the "Wodonga and Towong Sentinel" with the first issue on 29th August 1885. Mr Taylor died in June 1894. After James Ryan’s death the “Sentinel” was continued by his son Charlie until his death 26 February 1965. It was sold to the Border Morning Mail in 1965.
