This cruet set belonged to the Orr family of Addington, family of the donor.This is typical of a table condiment set.This cruet set has a diamond-shaped silver plated tray with four knobs for legs. A hoop-shaped frame is screwed underneath and holds four circular frames for holding condiment bottles. The frame has a truncated triangular top. Four crystal cut bottles with a diamond pattern fit into the framework. Two have crystal cut glass stoppers and two have silver-plated lids. This Bible originally belonged to members of the Orr family who came from Scotland and had a property at Addington near Learmonth in central Victoria (from the 1860s). Many families in the 19th and early 20th centuries had family bibles which were read individually by family members or read aloud to family members, especially on a Sunday. Many of these large-size bibles were used to record family information (births, deaths, marriages), though this one does not have any information recorded. This Bible is retained as a splendid example of a 19th century family Bible. It will be very useful for display. This is a hard-cover book with gilt edging on the pages. It has a leather cover with heavy gold embossing on the front and back covers. Inserted in the embossing are gold religious symbols and images. The Bible contains 45 chapters with the Old and New Testaments and other biblical and religion- related articles. There are many black and white illustrations and some colour illustrations. 1855 Stephen Charman donated land to the Methodist Church so that a School could be established to educate the children of the early settler market gardeners and farmers in the Cheltenham area . Education was valued by the general community and as well as schools they established mechanics Institutes and Libraries in Moorabbin Shire. Cheltenham State School No. 84 was among the first schools in Melbourne. Stephen Charman, 1821-1906 a market gardener, donated land for the first Methodist Chapel, Cemetery and School in Charman Rd Cheltenham 1855. The enrolment was 36 pupils with Mr Frederick Meeres as Teacher. 1863 the school is called Beaumaris Common School No 84 with 70 pupils and Walter Meeres as Teacher. 1869 another 2 acres in Charman Road were granted by the Education Board and brick building built . 1872 State School 84 Beaumaris was increasing enrollments and 1878 a new brick school was built to accommodate 174 pupils and the name changed to Cheltenham State School No.84 1894 Mentone State School No.2950 amalgamated with Cheltenham SS No.84. 1910 the buildings were in disrepair, overcrowding was increasing and renovations were made 1912 with further additions in 1925 and 1937. Post WW11 extra prefabricated Classrooms were added as enrollment increased to 1038 in 1955.. Cheltenham East State School 4754 was opened as housing development spread over the City of Moorabbin . Ordered by Langwill Bros., & Davies Ltd Melbourne Used for saw milling, dam constructions and log haulingFoden Traction Engine This engine is a compound traction engine built by Foden Ltd of Sandbach England in 1914 – builders number 4525. This was ordered by Langwill Bros and Davies Ltd of Melbourne and was used by Mr F Orr on his farm at Bullarto South Victoria. On the farm it was used for many agricultural purposes and was used at times as a stationary engine to run a wooden thrashing machine. The unit was last used on the farm in 1947 and put aside on the farm with a “museum” of other old agricultural tractors and machinery. Mr Orr gave us the engine as an exhibit for the Menzies Creek Museum of Puffing Billy in the 1960s. At that stage he was an elderly gentleman of 97 years and maintained a great interest in his farm which had been in his family’s hands for three generations at that stage. His grandfather had cut the farm from the bush. The traction engine in its youth was used to go around other farms in the district and went as far away as the Wimmera and Mallee farms thrashing crops of wheat, barley and oats. It towed the wooden thrashing machine behind it on its trips to these farms on hire to the farmers. ‘Garmure’, 26 Russell Street, Surrey Hills was built c. 1887 and renovated c1988. This photo was taken after renovation of the rear of the house when the corner tower was added. Occupants: 1890: Mr Caffin 1910: Miss Agnes Campbell Hutchinson Orr 1930 – 1988: Sextons Miss Orr was born in Hutchesontown, Glasgow to Francis Orr (1834-1859) and Jane McDonald. Her father died soon after her birth and her mother married Thomas Blood. She had a half-brother Robert McDonald Blood. In 1903 she, her brother and mother were living in Boundary Road. She is buried with them in Kew Cemetery. She died aged 57 on 1 December 1926. A black and white photograph of a Queen Anne Style weatherboard house with a return veranda. The roof is corrugated iron.
