The photo shows Legatee Os Gawler and another man at a function in 1961. L/- Galwer had been president of Melbourne Legacy in 1943. The other man isn't wearing a Legacy badge so may have been a guest.Legatees met up for comradeship meetings and functions. Members of the Board of Management in 1938 included Syd Birrell, Carl Carleton, Jack Barnes, Os Gawler, H Nicholson, W(Bill) Pearce, Lionel Wallace, Brian Armstrong, Eric Harding, Doug McKinlay. Text below the photo shows it was presented to J G Gillespie to commemorate his year as president, which was 1938. Another copy of this photo exists that is labelled as Board of Management 1949 - which is incorrect. Legatee Eric Harding OBE, MM, was also a member of the Limbless Soldiers' Association of Victoria as he lost a leg as a gunner in France in WW1. He served with the Australian Field Artillery in the original Anzac Corps. Despite loosing a leg he was active enough to ride with a Light Horse Party at the head of Melbourne's 1975 Anzac Day march. A Vale notice that was published in the Bulletin in 1975 on the death of Legatee Oswald Gawler. He joined Legacy in Adelaide in 1929 and was president of Melbourne Legacy in 1943. He served on the Co-ordinating Council for many years. In World War One he had served on Gallipoli and in France and Belgium. In 1917 he was severely gassed which impacted his health and eyesight in later years His professional career was as an actuary and his forecasts helped make many policy decisions in Legacy. A colour slide of an annual dinner in 1962. The slide shows former president Os Gawler making a speech while the president sits in the President's chair. Was with many other slides taken in the 1950s and 1960s. The slides have been photographed to make digital images and moved to archive quality sleeves. These two letters discuss the secretarial requirements of Legacy in the 1930s. One is a letter to Legatee Os Gawler outlining the costs incurred by the Board of Management General Fund for the past 3 and half years that related to the secretarial fees of Miss Wheeler and stationery and phone expenses. It was written in response to a request by the President. The second letter shows there was a resolution a couple of weeks later that the Board moved to appoint a sub committee. The sub committee consisted of Legatees Gillespie, Russell, Cremor, Parkes, Birrell, Kemsley, Meldrum and Gawler. The sub-committee decided that the co-ordination of the club was best served by a paid male Assistant Secretary and Employment Officer who would be responsible for all the administrative and employment work, assisted by a typist. Also that when that was enacted the services of Miss Wheeler and Mrs Andrews were no longer required. These documents show that the club had recognised the need for paid assistance in their administration. The notation H9 in red pen shows that it was part of the archive project that was trying to capture the history of Legacy. A notation on the back says: 'Appointment of first paid Secretary of Melbourne Legacy'.Very early documents that document the activities of the Legacy club and its expenditure. The photo shows a Junior Legatee, now Captain Len Frazer being inducted into Melbourne Legacy as a senior legatee on 26 January 1943. See also item 00040 for another photo of the event. The notes on the photo identify Legatees Stan Savige, Frank Doolan and W Cremor (ex-Pres. 1936), the man speaking is President Os Gawler, three others in the photo are unknown. Captain Len Frazer had been a Junior Legatee after his father died in the first World War at Ypres. He then served in World War 2 and on his return qualified to become a member of Melbourne Legacy. His service number was VX15205, full name Leonard Thomas Frazer. From Trove a newspaper article describes his background. "Argus (Melbourne, Vic. : 1848 - 1957), Wednesday 27 January 1943, page 5 FIRST JUNIOR LEGATEE IN SENIOR CLUB Capt L. T. Frazer was initiated to membership of Legacy Club by Maj-Gen S. G. Savige, founder of the club, at a simple ceremony yesterday. He was the first returned soldier of this war, and first junior Legatee, to be admitted to membership. Joining junior Legacy in 1928, Capt Frazer, whose father was killed in the last war, was a foundation member of the Intermediate Club, of which he became president, and he gained the right to admittance to the senior club by having seen active service with the AIF. Enlisting in April, 1940, he served in the Middle East, Greece, and Crete. His father was killed in action with the first AIF at Ypres. Capt Frazer, who joined the Melbourne City Council as an engineering junior in 1928, graduated to senior MCC engineering assistant before he enlisted. At present he is attached to Army Engineers, LHQ.
