Book, Merimbula Easiprint, The Otways that I knew, 1993
... The Otways that I knew. ...Condensing 100 years of Otway history the author tries to give an insight into the thoughts and ways of the settlers in opening the western Otway Ranges. It gives some indication of the mental pressure, hand-in-hand with the physical stress, as a settler cleared the land and made a living for his family. It covers how the rail link brought in the timber mills and their workers which made timber the main industry of that era, and covers the changes that took place in the 1930s as the mills closed down and the district raised crops, dairying and grazing. The Otways that I knew. Book, Geelong Bushwalking Club Inc, Walking the Otways, November 1986
... Walking the Otways. ...The Otways area of Victoria, at the time of writing, was an underused area for bushwalking. In the past, people have considered these ranges unsuited for walking because of the thick forest cover, cold and muddy conditions for much of the year, and the steep slopes. Some of the perceived difficulties are actually attractions and that it is possible to enjoy them with a forward planning and up-to-date information to guide the walker. The Geelong Bushwalking Club have included some useful but brief articles on basic aspects of bushwalking.Walking the Otways. Book, Colac and District Historical Society, The Otways through the magic lantern, 2013
... The Otways through the magic lantern. ...George Sydenham was appointed as Colac Shire Valuer and rate collector in 1890 which threw him into direct contact with the Otway people at a time when the first selectors were suffering badly. He would have heard their frustrations and grievances in great detail. When Secretary to the Colac Committee for the Railway Extension to Beech Forest he used his magic lantern slide shows from 1896 to support his case for a railway, by lauding the place and its potential, both for settlement and for timber production. The Otways through the magic lantern: commentary and glass slides of George Sydenham - lecture held in 1896. Poster, Colac Herald, Otway Ratepayers' Poll Flyer, 1963, 1963
... Otways, Victoria, Australia ...On 15 January 1964 the Shire of Otway was going to poll its ratepayers about a loan required to build temporary municipal workshops and a Shire Engineer's office in the Apollo Bay Riding. This led to a number of objections at public meetings in the west and central ridings, such that a Committee of protest was formed, with a nominated Chairman, Secretary and members, to put to ratepayers their considered point-of-view of disapproval. After drafts the Committee produced a printed flyer for distribution to ratepayers summarising the Committee's position. The Committee knew and agreed with a Council Sub-Committee's recommendation to Council of a new, adequate building on one site of suitable size. However, this did not happen. Instead Council moved for loans for temporary renovations of existing buildings. This the Committee objected to believing that Council must decide on a final location before any consideration is given to borrowing money for temporary repairs. This was the opinion the Committee put to ratepayers.B/W Flyer. Otway Ratepayers' Poll on January 15. This concerns YOU. To the Ratepayer as addressed. Photograph, Langford, Weston, Goods train arriving at Beech Forest, 1961, 9 August 1961
... Beech Forest, Otways, Victoria, 3237, Australia ...From late in 1960 VR took what were the first definite steps to close the Colac-Beech Forest line. 1,101 tonnes of freight per year flowed from Colac to Beech Forest because of increasing competition from the roads. From 1 July 1960 onwards, when pulpwood (hardwood) stopped being shipped from Beech Forest, a maximum of only 7,000 tonnes/year would be shipped to Colac. Including special trips passenger revenue earned a little more than $200 per annum. The issue of second-hand sleepers stopped entirely and the two track gangs only patrolled the track and tightened loose bolts. The line did not earn its way and on 4 November 1960 it was recommended that services over the narrow gauge line be discontinued. The rear of a goods train from Colac arrives at Beech Forest on 9 August 1961.
