Two days later their ship was bombed and sunk by the Japanese. Of the fifty-three survivors who scrambled ashore, twenty-one were murdered and the remainder taken prisoner. This engrossing record was kept by one of the surviving sisters, Betty Jeffrey, during the three-and-a-half gruelling years of imprisonment that followed. It is a grim story of deprivation and harsh conditions, but its darkness is relieved by the humorous incidents that somehow helped the women to preserve their sanity. Their ingenious and entertaining attempts to make their lot more tolerable, and their comradeship as they faced so much anguish leave the reader with enormous admiration for their endurance and strength. Conceived as large-scale ambulances to evacuate battle casualties suffered on Australian soil in the event of a landing by enemy forces, their role changed when Australia was spared the trauma of invasion. Instead, the trains becam mobile hospitals: their task to convey invalids from all allied (and enemy) forces to medical centres throughout the nation. One major assignment was to bring south from Queensland casualties evacuated from the battlefields of Papua-New Guinea, whose numbers reached crisis proportions at the close of 1942 and into early 1943. The trains were operated by United States Army personnel for twelve months, one in New South Wales and one in Queensland. The Pacific Star is a military campaign medal instituted by the United Kingdom in May 1945 for award to British and Commonwealth forces who served in the Pacific Campaign from 1939 to 1945, during the Second World War. The reverse is plain, however Stars issued to Australian personnel typically have recipient names engraved on the reverse.The medal is of high significance and should be kept in the collection.Made from yellow copper zinc alloy with somewhat sharp six points. The metal of the medal is cool-to-touch. The obverse has a central and textured design of the Royal Cypher 'GRJ VI', surmounted by a crown. A circlet, the top of which is covered by the crown, surrounds the cypher and is inscribed 'THE PACIFIC STAR'. The reverse is engraved with 'VFX53656 J.G. GIBSON'. The ribbon is tactile with red, navy, and light blue stripes. The dark blue, red, and light blue stripes signify equal contributions of the Navy, Army, and Air Force across all fronts. It is worth noting that typically the Second World War 1939-45 Star ribbon would be matched with a medal that also states the Second World War 1939-45 Star.
