Hugo Hans Hohne (dec. 1978) and wife Lelia (dec. 2000) - she used to breed dogs - lived in South Eltham near Eltham Lower Park, on Homestead Rd, 1940-c.1970? The Hohnes Hill Reserve in South Eltham along Hohnes Rd is named after them. The family’s location in Homestead Rd was common knowledge at the time. Hohnes Rd was an unnamed Government road that was named by the Council probably in the 1980s. Hohnes Hill Reserve was probably named later. We do not have any records of when the road and reserve were named. The Hunt Club Hotel (Now The Hunt Club and Community Arts Centre) and the Deer Park Reserve (Now John McLeod Reserve) are two of Deer Park's iconic places, both having long history with the district. This picture shows when The Club Hotel was a standalone building with the former stables out back. The building to the right and the caretaker's house at the rear were built by ICI C1932. No formal name has been assigned to this reserve. From research, which is still to be confirmed, it is believed the Deer Park Lions Club installed the infrastructure in the area, which includes the wooden path, table and bench seat, therefore for convenience we will refer to it as the Lions Club Reserve. Situated on the west bank of the Kororoit Creek, it lies directly opposite the Deer Park Hotel, where a swimming hole once enjoyed popularity among the early residents of Deer Park. Unfortunately, as the surrounding areas were developed for residential and industrial requirements, along came pollution that made these holes unsafe to swim in. The use of these holes were discouraged in the mid 1900's and subsequently the local Councils of the district started to provide man made swimming pools such as the ones located in Sunshine and St. Albans. In the 1930s, the Studley Park Trust decided to cater for young children by constructing wading pools in the Studley Park Reserve where the Collins Bridge crosses into Kew. The earliest references to the pools in newspaper articles and letters to the editor appear in the late 1930s. The eventual closing date of the Studley Park Pools has not been discovered, but it was clearly still in existence in 1940 when a representative of the Trust described the facility as one of many public fixtures requiring regular maintenance. The Eureka Stockade Memorial Park Committee was a voluntary group that worked towards commemorating the Eureka Stockade by caring for the Reserve and organising events there. Three page carbon copy of a letter from the Eureka Stockade Memorial Park Committee to the City of Ballarat Town Clerk. The carbon copy is not signed. The letter was written because the Committee were not satisfied with the action of the Council in relation to the Eureka Reserve in relation to parking.The letter starts as follows: "The Town Clerk City Hall Ballarat Dear Sir, After many years of harmonious cooperation between your Council and the above it is with regret and misgivings that we are forced to protest at any action of the City Council in regard to the Eureka Reserve. At out last meeting by an almost unanimous vote it was decided to protest at the erection of a line of posts north and south of the Kiosk excluding cares from the flat. For many years we have striven to popularise and improve the reserve by the voluntary effort and a lot of personal expense by members. Realising that we are living in a motor age, our plans have always included the provifing of adequate parking facilities for car Picnic Partites the providing of picnic tables etc in shady positions with easy access for cars. This privilege has been appreciated and enjoyed by the public for over 20 years, being perhaps the main attraction to the Eureka Stockade. It was with a feeling of frustration that we learned of teh Council's decision to exclude the cars from these facilities. The majority of my member are deeply hurt that your council should approve of such drastic change of policy without some consideration of the aims and future plans of this organisation. ... John McLeod Pavilion located on John Mcleod Reserve was the former club rooms of the Deer Park Football and Cricket Clubs. For many years these rooms were used by the clubs as change rooms for training, competition, and social functions. The rooms were also available for the general public to hire out for functions such as birthdays, engagements, etc. Due the condition of the building, the City of Brimbank made a decision late in 2025 to demolish the building in February 2026. Ballarat East was historically a separate municipality than Ballaarat. The streets developed along gold leads and early tracks. The Public Park Botanic Gardens and Recreation Reserve is now Mount Xavier Golf Course, and Ballarat Secondary College Eastern Campus. The section with Bettle's Private Property is now Saint Francis Xavier Primary School.
